Was Napoleon Bonaparte A Hero?
In the events of the French Revolution, various opinions have arisen about the French military and political leader Napoleon Bonaparte. On one hand some people believe that Napoleon was beneficial to France. On the other hand, others state that the Napoleon was not helpful to France because he made uneccesary modifications to France. I’ve found that Napoleon was certainly helpful to France because he made many useful reforms to his country. After the French Revolution, it takes matter further when the throne is empty since the king has been executed. Napoleon willingly steps in to become the new ruler. Napoleon believes he should be the ruler because he is heroic. The people of France accept him but soon they doubt whether Napoleon is a hero …show more content…
I’ve recently spoken with a French citizen, Gaspard Pierre who was a peasant before Napoleon’s rule. He states that life has gotten much better for the peasants since they are considered equal as the rest. Monsieur Gaspard Pierre felt that under France’s previous leader they had an unfair life. They did not have the choice of getting higher on the social ladder unless you were rich. When Napoleon was in charge one could do any occupation which depended on talent not wealth.
Similarly, author Colette Tatou’s recent book Napoleon’s Reign takes the stance that Napoleon recreates France by creating the Napoleonic Code. In her book, Tatou insists that the basic principles in Napoleon’s code represents the ideas of the French Revolution. According to Colette Tatou once the revolution ended there were no laws to be enforced. This caused many problems in the French society. Once Napoleon become the emperor his code united France.
It is clear that without Napoleon France’s peasants would not have had a fair life and the revolution would have been a waste. Clearly, with the help of Napoleon the Napoleonic code was made. It united France by preserving the social aims of the revolution, preserving the interests of the rising middle class and it guaranteed civil

I think that Napoleon in a way demonstrated French Revolution ideals. The French Revolution ideals were for equality and rights for the people, but Napoleon took away a many of the rights that people wanted. The people of France were not allowed to gather in groups of people and discuss beliefs that did not follow Napoleons, and he re-established slavery. He also controlled everything that was published and banned some authors from writing or publishing books during his reign. To me he wanted the people to believe in this ideals rather than promote them to have their own beliefs and thoughts, and being killed for thinking differently to me is not equality or a…

On November 1799 the Coup of Brumaire brought Napoleon that should bring to France power and leading in Europe. The nation feared by all others. This shows that the Directory was very weak that caused Napoleon to rise to power, but there were other reasons, such as Napoleon’s political connections, his success in wars and his own personal strengths, and the opportunities that he creates for…

The are two sides to every story. The French Revolution brought significant change to France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was a period of time that produced a remodeling of the French Government system, an Enlightened mindset, and the rise of a new prominent ruler, Napoleon Bonaparte. Emperor Napoleon, as he so deemed himself, initially took on his duties by trying to bring together what had been a much divided nation. He made concessions with both the left (the constitutionalists) and the right (the monarchists). His concessions earned him respect from many, however, as his power grew and grew, Napoleon developed a tendency to rely strongly on his military to gain power. His militaristic eagerness to monopolize Europe earned him much respect and praise from the French people, but very infrequently do we recognize those individuals that served in the military to carry through Napoleon’s aggressive orders. Those who fought for Napoleon’s success received very little in return; much to lack of motivation. Fortunately for the world, Jakob Walter’s story as a conscript for Napoleon’s Grand Army has been public for the world. His powerful accounts of the pitiful conditions that conscripts endured during their wartime travels would give many a different opinion of the “Great” Napoleon. As mentioned earlier, there are two sides to every story.…

The ruler is one of the most important parts of a country. They can cause gain or loss for the people, and sometimes even a mixture of both. An exemplary leader can bring great change to a nation, and there are many who have caused incredible reforms. For example, Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in the United States, and King Louis XVIII of France inadvertently caused a revolution. Though Louis may be well known, the most famous of France’s rulers was arguably Napoleon. His military success and determination led to a huge amount of power within his French Empire, but ultimately a great fall. The entire nation of France was able to appreciate Napoleon and give him perhaps more credit than he is due; they saw him as a beacon of hope. Much of Napoleon’s rule consisted of extreme changes to France’s society and church, but other areas, such as education, individual rights, and government, were hardly affected.…

Napoleon Bonaparte reinforced the idea that he was the child of the revolution by introducing the innovative Napoleonic Code which set out to unify France. Bonaparte, a certified pragmatist pleased the masses of France and gained support by fighting for their concerns and rights. At a time of chaos where France lacked foundation, Napoleon introduced a Civil Code. The code was a written statement of what the revolution stood for, unification. Is it not an absurd and terrible thing that what is true in one village is false in another? What kind of barbarism is it that citizens must live under different laws? ... When you travel in this kingdom you change legal systems as often as you change horses?" The Code introduced by napoleon changed the landscape of continental Europe. Before the code, laws relied heavily on customs and traditions…

When he made the changes that he did, it made it all of the classes a little more equal. He was always looking out for the people so he could get their support. Napoleon made a tax system that was fair unlike the old one. The old system would make the poorer people pay more than the wealthy. Another thing at he did for the people was make government ran public schools available for male students of all backgrounds. People that finished the school went to office not with family connections anymore but on the basis of merit. He also made laws that were called Napoleonic Code. These laws gave the country of France set of rules that were for the most part fair and got rid of many injustices. The two major things that were wrong with the code were that the people did not have freedom of speech or freedom of the press. Napoleon wanted to make himself emperor so he did just that. Because of the changes he made the French voters supported him. In 1804 he took the crown from the pope and crowned himself emperor of France. The people would have also been happy with Napoleon when he sold land to the United States. He sold the land for fifteen million dollars. This brought money to France and also would make the British upset. If I was a member of the bourgeoise I would also be happy with how Napoleon was trying to get more land for France. He was a very determined leader which would be another thing that they would be happy about. I would be happy because Napoleon treated the people fairly and made rules in the best interest of the people for the most…

To most of Europe, Napoleon was just another conqueror trying to expand his territories, but to the people of France, he was a great leader; he “restored peace and order at home” (Kagan, Ozment, Turner, Frank 586). Restoring order to France was one of his greatest domestic achievements; the people loved him for his support in helping them win their fight for equal rights “to achieve wealth, status, and security for their property” (Kagan, Ozment, Turner, Frank 586).…

France was also in a state where they desperately needed a system of order, they are in a midst of a revolution with no one taking charge. It makes sense that Napoleon, a man who seizes power, takes control of the revolution. Napoleon also had a reputation of being an excellent military chief, which lead to an even greater acceptance to him in France. In 1802, he declared himself the consul for life, and 2 years after that, he held enough power to become the emperor of the French. The French longed for change because the American Revolution had inspired them, and there was a large gap between the rich and the poor.…

Was Napoleon Bonaparte a hero or a tyrant? Did the good of his actions outweigh the bad? Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader who rose to power during the French Revolution. He eventually conquered most of Europe and named himself emperor. I believe that Napoleon was a tyrant for a few different reasons. These include that he was egotistical, selfish, and untruthful.…

To many people it is seen as a great thing of equality for all the people of France but, while it declared “all” people equal it forgot one important group of the French society, the women. Before Napoleon, women were treated well and had some rights in France, they were not allowed to vote yes, but they had some rights. Napoleon comes in with his “equality” code and completely strips the women of all the rights that they had. He was very religiously tolerant in his code but he excluded a huge part of society. It would be one thing if the women hadn’t had rights before he came in but power savvy Napoleon completely disrespects the women of the time by not even acknowledging them as people and stripping them of the little rights they had in the first place. The Napoleonic Code makes no distinctions between all males, but excludes women in its law (Whitman, James). A tyrant is defined as “a sovereign or other ruler who uses power oppressively or unjustly” (“the definition of a tyrant”). With the Napoleonic Code Napoleon uses his power to unfairly and unjustly oppress the French women of the…

During Napoleon’s reign as Emperor of the French Empire he made laws, or a set of codes, that applied to all of France. He enacted laws that protected the people, promoted religious tolerance and took away the serfdom and feudalism systems, all of which gave people more freedom over their land to support themselves and their families. The well-being of the people was compromised since the workers lacked many rights, this being evident by the fact that trade unions and strikes were illegal, which encouraged employer abuse.…

The people were generally happy about this code because of the opportunities and freedom that the code permitted. The code Napoleon included such liberties as declaring everyone is equal, freedom of religion, and trial by jury. Although Napoleon was a great leader there were some aspects of his rule that people did not like about him. The people dislike that absolute dictatorship of Napoleon and his attitude of anything he says goes. The people disliked the way that Napoleon dealt with civil issues that arose during the wars.…

Napoleon wanted to be portrayed as supporting the French Revolution, and did in many aspects. For instance in one his speeches to his troops he rallies them behind enlightened French ideas, such as liberating the people, and respect of everyone’s property, religion, and customs. In this speech he said that anyone caught pillaging will be killed, in fact he halted the pillage of Rome, which shows his humanity but also connected himself to the people of France by showing how he supports the people. This is similar to how in his letter to Jerome he expresses his wish that Jerome abolishes serfdom and set up law and order in Germany, just like he did in France. With serfdom gone the people of France gained equality, a main issue that caused the French Revolution in the first place. Napoleon wrote the Napoleonic Code granting civil rights to every Frenchman. This directly supported the French revolutionist’s ideas by granting one of the laws they were fighting for during the French Revolution.…

¬Napoleon Bonaparte has been one of the biggest known leaders and highly debated characters. Known for his leadership skills, but debated for the many different interpretations of his actions. Most historians have believed that Napoleon is either an Heir or a Betrayer. It was through his actions on how you can see how Napoleon is considered a betrayer to the French revolution. This is shown through different actions and the way he handled certain situations. The first sign that he was a betrayer against the French revolution was that he was established as an absolute dictator. Also, Napoleons betrayal is portrayed with the unnecessary wars that bankrupted France due to the idea of expanding his universal brotherhood. Lastly, Napoleons actions were considered to be completely contradictory to the French revolution motto of Liberty Equality Fraternity. As you can see through these three arguments, that Napoleon proves that he really is a betrayer to the French revolution.…

In result of Napoleon’s many successes into eliminating negative components of the French Revolution have convinced many citizens of the French nation that Napoleon is the hero of The French Revolution; however, due to his despotic intentions, inevitable failures, as well as other figures of the French Revolution also being considered to be heroic, prove otherwise. The French government in the beginning of our French Revolution was in need of a man with military success, they were in need of a man like Napoleon. Napoleon was assigned only to prevent chaos during the French Revolution in 1797, but eventually was admitted as the French Emperor of France in 1804. Despite his efforts and success into improving the French Revolution in economic, political, and social ways; Napoleon soon expressed tyrannical tendencies through his enforcement of democratic despotism and un-kept promises of everlasting military winnings. However, the citizens, and once myself, had created an idealized illusion of Napoleon considering he had the press censor his losses. Not only that, but Napoleon’s most prized and likable creation, the Napoleonic Code (A code of laws that enforced the endurance of religion, equality, and the abolition of feudalism), contradicts itself considering it allows husbands and fathers to maintain complete authority over their wives and children. This only proves that the Napoleonic Code is in favor of commanding power rather than individual rights. A hero is someone who humbly remains undefeated and is idealized for their genuine…
