War Of 1812: General William Hull
During the War of 1812, General William Hull played an important role. He is most famous for his surrender to the British at Fort Detroit at the outset of the War of 1812, and for his missing actions in 1814. As the War of 1812 came along, President Thomas Jefferson sent Hull to defend the Michigan Territory. Hull recruited militiamen from Ohio and Kentucky. His primary goal was to defend Detroit, but he also launched a half-hearted invasion of Canada in 1812. Hull's army moved very slowly and lost any advantages it had in surprise and superior numbers of men. As a result, Hull retreated to Detroit. Hull's performance convinced some of Hull's junior officers to call for his removal.

    The British captured a vessel that had Hull’s baggage and papers on it, resulting in them finding out what his plans were. Things became worse for Hull, as around 200 militiamen from Ohio refused to cross American territory, yet he continued to be confident. He and his men crossed the Detroit River and into Canada on July 12, 1812, where he announced a written notification letting the citizens know that they would “be emancipated from tyranny and oppression”. Hull stated “Had I any doubt of eventual success I might ask your assistance, but I do not, I come prepared for every contingency”. His words were laughed at and his brief seize of Fort Malden ended after Shawnee chief Tecumseh’s warriors ambushed his supply train. The Americans were chased back across the river and British commander Isaac Brock initiated cannon fire from the Canadian side at Fort Detroit.
