In the Kikongo language, nommo means word, but it is also “the force that makes things live as what they are” (Kingsolver 209). Everything is present in this world, but once named, it gives them the life that they are named after. For example, a snake has the life it has because it is named snake, while a chicken is not a snake because that is not what it is named. This is why Adah and Leah live different lives despite being twins; they have different names.…

After reading “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, I have realized how many variations of English that are actually used today. When I am writing a essay, or speaking in front for a audience, I try to sound very formal. I use words I normally don’t. But more importantly, I structure the way I write or speak differently. Most of the time, I don’t focus on the words I put in my sentences, or how I structure them, I just say it. Like Tan, I speak differently with my family compared to when I am speaking to my boss. With my family, I don’t filter what I say, or how I say it as much. On the other hand, with my boss, I tend to tread carefully with what I say and how I say it. For example, when I see my family, I might greet them by saying “how's it going?”…

Our ideals as social beings are shaped in the context of our environment. First, we emerge to be the persons that we are through our relationships with our families, friends and neighbors; our associates in school or in the workplace, the people in authority: teachers, superiors and leaders in the different institutions or sectors. Of special influence are the people who have taught us life principles by their nurturing behaviors and good examples. Second, our societal realities determine the extend by which our social development as a people is achieved. The healthy interplay between the responsiveness of our socio-political structures and leaders, on one hand, and the active and responsible citizenship of the people, and other hand, are essential in ensuring a governance that is maka-tao at maka-Diyos and thus, promotive of social development.…

Basically, it is one of the few words that catch our attention. Whenever we see the word “sex” in magazines, newspapers and other print materials, we tend to stop at some point and become interested to read the article where it is written. It’s not because we simply feel the urge to read about sex but perhaps the “questioning self” wants to clarify and discover the truth about this matter.…

A foreign language is a language indigenous to another country. It is also a language not spoken in the native country of the person referred to, i.e. an English speaker living in Japan can say that Japanese is a foreign language to him or her. These two characterisations do not exhaust the possible definitions, however, and the label is occasionally applied in ways that are variously misleading or factually inaccurate.…

"Prior to the Spanish colonization of the Philippines in 1565, there are no written records of the islands that make up the modern day Philippines."3 In the year 1565, Miguel López de Legazpi, the Conquistador travelled from Spain and founded the first Spanish settlement in the country, firstly on the island of Cebú. They occupied the kingdoms of Tondo and Manila, establishing it as the capital of the Spanish East Indies.
