The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) is one that I have been familiar with my entire life. However, I have never known much about the business side of the company. It was founded in 1923 by Roy and Walt Disney, who came to Hollywood from Kansas City, Missouri. Walt and Roy produced a short animated film series that became known as the Alice Comedies. The small studio in which they worked was outgrown and replaced by a larger facility, where they became Disney Bros. Studio (Disney Archives). In 1928, Mickey Mouse was born, followed by Pluto, Goofy, and the rest of the Disney gang, and the Disney Brothers Studio became the Walt Disney Studio. Disney’s first full-length animated film came out in 1937. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs became the highest grossing film by 1939 and the first animated feature film ever produced (studioservices.go.com).…

Walt arrived in California in the summer of 1923 with dreams and determination, but little else. He had made a short film in Kansas City about a little girl in a cartoon world, called Alice's Wonderland, and he planned to use it as his "pilot" film to sell a series of these Alice Comedies to a distributor. On October 16, 1923, a New York distributor, M. J. Winkler, contracted to release the Alice Comedies, and this date became the formal beginning of The Walt Disney Company. Originally known as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, with Walt Disney and his brother Roy as equal partners, the company soon changed its name, at Roy's suggestion, to the Walt Disney Studio, which was initially housed in a succession of storefront buildings in Hollywood before becoming established on Hyperion Avenue. The Disney Corporation is a leader in both the family entertainment and the movie media industries. They are internationally acclaimed for their amusement parks and resorts, media networks, studio entertainment, and interactive media (Bahera, 2012, para. 1). Through Walt Disney’s vision, drive, creativity, and passion, Disney has become one of the world’s most successful multi-media corporations. Disney established its core values from the beginning, and they are still lived today. Since Walt Disney’s departure in 1966, Disney has had several leaders, including the current CEO, Bob Iger, who have duplicated Walt’s style and have continued to make Disney the powerhouse entertainer it is today. There are four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These four functions are affected by several internal and external factors, including globalization, technology, innovation, diversity, and ethics. Disney became the success it is today by successfully applying the four management functions and understanding the impact the internal and external factors have on each of them.…
