Wal-Mart’s Foreign Expansion

1. Do you think Wal-Mart could translate its merchandising strategy wholesale to another country and succeed? If not, why not?
I think it solely depends on the culture of the country they are trying to enter. As stated in the case when Wal-Mart tried to expand to Germany and Korea it failed. Although when they entered the Chinese market their sales soared. Making it easy to grow and open hundreds of stores throughout the country. I believe Wal-Mart could succeed in another country they would first have to study their culture and shopping habits. Then they would have to alter there merchandising strategy to flow with the culture.

2. Why do you think Wal-Mart was successful in Mexico?
I think that Wal-Mart was successful in Mexico because they hired local managers. Wal-Mart Corporation decided they needed to change their strategy to appeal to the community. Also they realized the demand for cheap products and used that to their advantage. Once people started shopping at Wal-Mart, they starting to go back to their roots and use the discount strategy used in the U.S.

3. Why do you think Wal-Mart failed in South Korea and Germany? What are the differences between these countries, and Mexico?
Wal-Mart failed in these countries because of the strong local competitors. Consumers like the fresh and better quality food. They were set on their local markets and did not buy into Wal-Mart’s low cost strategy. These countries were not in dire need of cheaper products, while in Mexico they had the needed for discounted prices.

4. What must Wal-Mart do to succeed in China? Is it on track?
Wal-Mart had to mend there marketing strategy a little bit when entering into the Chinese market. In the Chinese cultural the people did not want there meet cut and packaged. They want their meat fresh. So Wal-Mart adjusted this by putting fish tanks, and displayed the meat uncovered. I think Wal-Mart is on track in adapting their strategies

    Wal-Mart failed to become the successful store in Germany that it is in America. Germany is not the only country that the organization has problems in. They also have problems in South Korea and Japan because even the low prices and large selection of merchandise they are having a hard time competing with the chain markets in these countries and the shopper habits.     Wal-Mart is probably one of the most recognizable company’s in the world. As stated earlier there are over 600 Wal-Mart discount stores in the United States. Wal-Mart has over 3,000 supercenters in the United States. They have a combination of these two styles of stores in over 28 countries around the world. Stores that are located outside of the United States operate under a different banner, but still have the same goal as their sister stores in the United States: Save people money, so they can live better.
