Walgreens Swot Analysis
Overview Founded in 1901, Walgreens had revenues of $63.3 billion in fiscal 2009. As of Aug. 31 2009, the company operated 6,997 drugstores in 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico versus 6,443 a year ago. In fiscal 2009 Walgreens added 544 new drugstores, including 70 by acquision, acquisition? growing by 8.6%. The company is principally in the retail drugstore business and its operations are within one reportable business segment. (Walgreens 2009)
Strengths
The successful implementation of technology in both the store and supply chain is a real strength for the Walgreens Company. They have successfully implemented the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) throughout its chain of stores. RFID allows Walgreens to monitor the impact of sales from specific displays. Wow! It provides Walgreens with the tools to maximize both its efficiency and profits. (Wilson 2006) Walgreens also offers the service of in-store medical clinics. These in-store clinics are conveniently located across from the Walgreens pharmacy offering customers a diagnoses and treatment inside the store. These services allow Walgreens to promote a strong brand image of both service and personal attention within the healthcare industry. (Walgreens 2010) Walgreens is a pioneer of energy conservation among retailers; in 2006 they installed solar panels on 96 stores and two distribution centers in California, and 16 New Jersey locations (Walgreens 2010).
This is a new paragraphWalgreens’ biggest strength is their knowledge of their customers. For instance, they know that their customer prioritize convenience; therefore they implement a saturation style store expansion plan to insure that customers are close to a Walgreens, because if not, they won’t shop there. By initiating programs such as their Rx Savings Advisor Walgreens has enhanced its focus on the aging population. This particular program is a tool whereby Medicare customers can identify the most compatible Part D prescription plan

    When analyzing the annual financial reports for Wal-Mart it is easy to see a positive outlook in Wal-Mart 's future of financial health. Looking at and comparing the ratios with other companies in the same industry, Wal-Mart seems to be the easy frontrunner. A review of the current, debt/equity, inventory turnover, net profit margin, Return on Total Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), and quick ratios all indicate that the trend of leading the retail industry will continue. The current ratio (which is the current assets divided by current liabilities) is a measure of how much in liabilities a company has compared to its assets. Wal-Mart in 2010 had a current ratio of 0.9 and the industry had a 1.1. The quick ratio (which is current assets minus inventory divided by current liabilities) is a measure of a company 's ability meet short-term obligations. In 2010 Wal-Mart had a quick ratio of 0.3 compared to the industry of 0.4. The next ratio is the inventory turnover ratio which, according to Fraser, L. M., & Ormiston (2007), is defined as the cost of goods sold divided by the remaining inventory at the end of the accounting cycle. In 2010, Wal-Mart’s inventory turnover ratio was 9.1 times compared to a 9.2 times in 2009. Even though this inventory turnover ratio is a little lower than 2009 it is still about the same as industry average, which is 8.5. This indicates that Wal-Mart is trending about the same as similar companies. Now looking at the debt/equity ratio for 2010 was 0.73 compared to the industry of 0.67. This indicates that Wal-Mart is trending in debt ratio also with their competitors. The return on assets was 9.1 in 2010 compared to 8.5 for the industry.     The Walgreens chain began in 1901, with a drug store on the corner of Bowen Ave and Cottage Grove, Chicago, Illinois, United States owned by Galesburg native Charles R. Walgreen, Sr.[6] By 1915, there were five Walgreen drugstores. He added several improvements to the stores such as soda fountains and luncheon service. He also began to make his own line of drug products and was then able to control the quality of the items and sell them at lower prices. By 1916, 19 stores were in operation, all in Chicago. And in that same year, all the stores were consolidated under Walgreen Co. The 1920s was a very successful decade for Walgreens. In 1921, the company opened stores outside of residential areas and also introduced the malted milk shake in 1922. Walgreens also established its very own ice cream manufacturing plants to match the demand for ice cream at that time. By the mid 1920s, there were about 65 stores with an annual sale of 1.2 million dollars. By this time, Walgreens had expanded into other states like Wisconsin, Missouri, and Minnesota. By 1930, there were 397 stores in 87 cities with annual sales of 4 million dollars. The company did not really suffer from the Stock Market Crash and Great Depression. By 1934, Walgreens was operating in 33 states with over 600 stores. After Charles Walgreen Sr. died, his son Charles R. Walgreen Jr. took over and ran the chain until his retirement. The Charles R. Walgreen Jr. years were relatively prosperous, but lacked the massive expansion seen in the early part of the company. Charles "Cork" R. Walgreen III took over after Jr's retirement in the early 1970s, and brought the company through many modern initiatives, including the switch to a computer inventory based system (bar code scanning).
