Wal-Mart Marketing Strategy
Just as students do their homework for a good grade, so must companies by developing sound strategic marketing plans. In business the bottom line is about revenue and how to increase revenue for the shareholders. However, your market strategy and plan can be the difference between success and failure. Let me start by defining two of the more popular marketing strategies, mass and targeted. Mass marketing is a marketing philosophy which the seller views the market as a homogeneous whole, and, therefore, has only one marketing program (the same product, the same price, the same promotion and the same distribution system) for everyone. Whereas, a target market is that particular segment of a total population on which the retailer focuses its merchandising expertise to satisfy that submarket in order to accomplish its profit objectives. Target marketing is also known as “niche” marketing. I am asked whether, instead of or in addition to the markets it currently serves, should Wal-mart serve the following markets: African Americans, the Affluent, Empty Nesters, Hispanics, Suburbanites and Rural Residents? My short answer to this question is yes, with a continued focus on their niche customers the suburbanites and rural residents. Moreover, the African American, affluent empty nesters, Hispanics populations would require focused target strategies (differential) to satisfy their specific wants/needs. ACNielsen defines micromarketing as, "the art of targeting customers at the account and store levels by matching marketing efforts to the characteristics of shoppers at specific stores." In other words, micromarketing is all about tailoring and customizing product assortment, shelf placement, pricing, services, trade promotions, even store layout and design to appeal to and satisfy the needs, demands, and expectations of consumers in a store's trading area (the area around a store in which it competes for business).     Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world based on revenues and competes with other retailers like Costco, Target and Amazon, according to Forbes (2011). According to one analyst at Forbes, Walmart commands about 33% of the U.S. grocery market. Walmart’s venture into convenience stores or neighbourhood market’s could be seen as acquiring profit from a whole new segment of the market. We need to understand why Walmart have decided to open new convenience stores to get an idea of their retail strategy. According to The Economist 1 ‘Demographics and changes in lifestyles have played into the convenience stores hands, with young urbanities and the well off elderly often more concerned about location and speed than price.’ So as we can see these convenience stores provide something that Walmart’s superstores cannot, quick, convenient service.     Wal-Mart has implemented lean initiatives to increase profits even before the economic downturn. In 2005, the company implemented a plan to target wealthier consumers—outside of their normal blue collar clientele—with a more modern marketing campaign (Kabel, 2006). The company also began stocking more high-end merchandise to cater to this group of consumers (Kabel, 2006). In order to stay in business, a company must work to increase business during good economic times as well as bad. In addition to managing a changing market through business lean initiatives, Wal-Mart also focuses on meeting strategic goals to increase the bottom line for the company. One tactic the company started implementing involves opening stores in more urban areas. However, the stores will be much smaller than the typical 150,000 square foot “big box” model. These “Smallmart” stores will allow the company to enter areas where large open areas are few and far between .This strategy allows the company to access a previously unobtainable customer base as well as bring jobs to places with high unemployment and fresh food options where not many exist.
