WRI 1050: My Writing Process
WRI 1050 English Fundamentals for me was a turning point in finding out more of myself as a writer as well as the do’s and don’ts of college writing. This writing course has contributed and enhanced my writing process. It gave me new tools to add in my arsenal, and helped me get rid of old bad writing beliefs as well as habits that I’ve picked up from other students. In high school, students would try to impress their teacher with unnecessary complex words and sentences, which could sometimes take away the message that they were trying to convey. Our mentality was that the bigger and the more complex the words are, the better. It was not so when I got to WRI 1050. I soon learned that using big words and complex sentences meant nothing if the essay lacked a strong content. I remember when I would get an essay assignment in high school. My writing process consisted of only one draft, and no audience to read my essay to give any feedbacks. It would take me a really long time to get …show more content…
WRI 1050 helped me get rid of my writer’s block by teaching me how to free-write. I think of it as a word vomit, writing anything that comes to mind about the topic. Basically a way for me to get my ideas down on paper no matter how messy and unorganized it may look and sound at first. This is how I beat writer’s block because I wasn’t spending my time thinking and judging what I had to write. As a result, streams of words and ideas came rushing, and there were words flowing continuously on my paper. Free-write enabled me to free myself from any expectations. I remember my first free-write. Words continually kept coming and I was no longer worried about not being able to reach the page requirement. Nothing mattered as long as words are being typed, which comforted me a lot and gave me fluidity in my

My writing process all depends on what I am writing. Some writings I can sit down and write the whole things and be done with it, while others can take me multiple days or even weeks. I normally sit down and work on it until I finish, get tired of it, or a hit a roadblock. I try to stop when I feel like I am writing the same thing over and over or if I feel like I just need a break. Most of the time, if I feel like I am writing and it is really bad, it is because it is and I need to take a break and come back to it later. Working on it in pieces normally works well for me, to break it up and take it a little bit at a time. I normally struggle when I do not like what I am writing about or when I run out of information to put in my writing. I…

Some of the most common mistakes are usually small and careless mistakes. I have seen some essays that can be too wordy by containing words that do not add value to the subject. Like, “This statement is not very influential because he gives no evidence that this statement is true.” When you can say it like, “This…

At the beginning of the course I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was my first year in college and my first English class of the year. In High school, English classes worshiped the 5 paragraph essay format, and this format spontaneously disappeared in English 101. Instead of the 5 paragraph format, we were introduced to writing about the text instead of the topic. Our papers weren’t structured as 5 paragraphs as much as length in pages. The texts we were introduced to were focused on rhetorical analysis. Rhetorical analysis is an essay that breaks down a work into pieces and explains how these pieces fit together to give off a certain effect, such as persuasion. The papers we were doing were are interpretative but based on rhetorical analysis.…

There are many essays throughout the text of Writing About Writing, which discuss writing in a particular way. In chapter two, Maria P. Rey writes a letter to her high school criticizing their teaching strategies. The rules her previous professors had restricted her with often times caused writers block. Mike Rose, a student at the University of California, found that “ students who experienced blocking were all operating either with writing rules or… strategies that impeded rather than enhanced the composing process” (272). Rose’s research supports the dilemma of Maria’s writers block. Students do not intentionally produce poor papers. Rather it is the stress they experience along with…

Overall, my experience taking English 106-H was fulfilled and I truly enjoyed my time in class. What were once weaknesses, slowly, but surely became strengths. Thus, it was through my weaknesses that helped me develop my writing skills, making me a stronger writer. Through free writing, word traps, and ideas of my own, I was able to implement those strategies into my writing. Nevertheless, I have reached my goal, but still will continue to strive for even stronger writing through out all of my courses at Lycoming College.…

After completing WRD 103 fall quarter I went into the new winter quarter with the former knowledge from the class. After taking WRD 103, I thought I had a good understanding on rhetorical appeals and how to write a well-organized paper. Because of my previous knowledge I had the expectation that WRD 104 would solely focus on how to research a topic and properly cite sources. However, I soon came to realize that the class will broaden my perspectives on academic writing even more.…

Annotation homework taught me how to think analytically and read critically to become a better reader. Learning various writing styles such as Toulmin Model of Argumentation, point-by-point or block methods, and annotated bibliography, opened the door for me explore different writing formats and learn various writing rules. Before, I was always caught in a five paragraph format when it came to writing essays but now I learned that there is no set amount of paragraphs to fully express my claims. Moreover, peer and faculty feedback helped shape my writing to become clear, with purpose, with better transitions and grammar. Researching assignments helped me to become proficient in the research process and explore online databases. Through class activities, I learned about the MLA format, critical reading, coherence/cohesion and proper citation. Every assignment was not easy and it was very time consuming; however, the process was worth it and it shaped me to become an advanced writer. This class was the most beneficial class among the other three classes that I took this semester. WRI 001 has taught me so many strategies that I need for future classes such as writing a research paper, the proper way to write…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…
