Voters have described the selection of Trump and Clinton for presidency similar to choosing the unlikeable (Clinton) versus the unthinkable (Trump) (Black, 2016). This is due to their different personalities and ideologies that are atypical to the qualities of a traditional president. According to Ohio State University psychologists who created a test of political language, the reason why Trump and Clinton appeal to different audiences are because of the sheer contrast of their high and low intensity language. Psychologists claim that Trump utilizes high-intensity style language, such as emphasizing “very, very safe” and many adjectives in his language. Clinton, instead is more restrained using the words “ensure” and uses “we” statements instead …show more content…
In the 2016 election in particular, younger audiences and people play a fundamental part of the voting process. Psychology Today claims that the five priorities of younger audiences are that they want to be challengers of the status quo (change), believe in the common good (connect with youth issues), seeking truth (emotional and logical judgement) and are more open towards idealistic and moral-ethical convictions tied to their identities (Black, 2016). Voters over the age of 30, on the other hand have more knowledge and thus are more open-minded towards ethical issues. Many higher-income earners pay more attention to economical and global money issues, middle-income to stances in mainstream issues such as gun control and lower-income pay attention to ideas of change and growth and must therefore be taken into …show more content…
Although she has been involved with many scandals such as Benghazi, she clearly has more political experience than Trump. Dr. Gail Saltz, a psychoanalyst says that Clinton appeals to the American audience because she is calculative, diplomatic, formal and aware (Chozick, 2016). Clinton’s calculative nature can be seen on her speeches, which are rehearsed and spoken with conviction as she uses more complex language. She is also diplomatic in her speeches, avoiding insults and questions, not name-calling, raising her voice and going out of focus in delivery of her message unlike Trump. Lastly, she speaks with a more formal register, appealing to the knowledgeable. It is her pure intellect and awareness on diplomacy that attracts Clinton’s psychology in her voters. One target audience Clinton appeals to is female voters in particular is also because she is the first female presidential nominee. Feminists say that Clinton’s win can help empower women, showing that that they can be equal in strength (Chozick, 2016). Secondly, Clinton’s supporters are also the working middle-class generation, as many agree with her diplomacy as they believe that America is operating efficiently as of today. Many of her supporters are college graduates, well-informed and believe that Trump is not a politician, merely a businessman. Thus, voters believe that Clinton has more logical and emotional
