Voodoo Doll As Americans, we have the right to freedom of speech. Which basically means we have the right to say whatever we would like to say. Granted, some of the things that we say can be offensive and can hurt others that we are around. Just because we have this right, does not necessarily mean that we can take it all for granted. In culture today, people think that they can get away with almost anything, including with what they say. Also, with everything that we get away with saying, we think it is alright for us just to continue to say it when it is not. She talks about how guys do certain things differently and how she wants to do it too. From a personal perspective it seems like she has been done wrong by a guy and is trying to make a point. Her point being, “what if girls acted that way?” For example, to start off her song, Ciara says, “Pull up your pants, just like him take out the trash, just like him getting your cash like him, fast like him girl you wanna act like he did I’m taking ‘bout, security codes on everything on vibrate so your phone don’t ever ring” (Like a Boy, 1-6). There are some things that women just can not do like men can. But when it says in the song, “security codes on everything on vibrate so your phone don’t ever ring,” that just does not apply to men when they “want” to hide something. I mean, there is plenty of people who have security codes on their phones and keep their phones on vibrate and are not hiding anything. I do that all the time and I am not hiding anything from anyone in particular. But if it was I was trying something bad from a loved one I would feel extremely guilty about it. Later on in her song, Ciara says, “Cuz I’m out, four in the morning on he corner rolling doing my own thing what if I had a thing on the side, made you cry would the rules change up or would you that still apply id I played you like a toy?” (Like a Boy, 12-15). We do not really think about it much when a guy sings them. With women singing songs like these, we are criticized and talked down upon so much. When guys comes out with songs like these, we think that it is alright because they are guys and that is just how some guys are. But that is just the way of life; we are functioned to criticize everything we think is wrong. We tend to over react to the smallest things and make it this huge deal when it truly is
