Volunteering Personal Statement
Ever since I was a child I was always inspired to help others. Whether it was volunteering or donating or even taking a survey to give my perspective, as long as it was helping someone and making a difference- I always enjoyed it. So going into high school year, I took the initiative of volunteering. Volunteering at the Yale Hospital since high school for four years truly changed me as a person by helping me grow as a better leader. I came out of my comfort zone and the program gave me an opportunity to experiment and try new things. It taught me responsibility, working skills, how to interact with patients, staff, and visitors of the hospital. I was lucky enough to work at different sectors of the hospitals and familiarize myself with the hospital setting. In this process, I learned …show more content…
I have also mentored students and taught Nepali language to the second generation Nepalese-American. Homework assignments were given every week along with in-class quizzes. The end goal was to make them bilingual so that they could practice Nepali language with parents at home. The time and energy I put into this project has notably shown through the time management, collaboration and communication skills I have acquired over time. Volunteering is such a rewarding and enjoyable experience that I still continue to volunteer today. I study with a purpose of helping others who do not have the opportunity or privilege to the same higher education as me. This scholarship is a stepping stone towards that. Being a doctor is a dream that I have always dreamt of since I was really young. So with this scholarship I can live my dream and help those in need after becoming successful. After becoming a doctor, I have vowed to give back to societies, especially by providing free treatments to poor and needy people in third world countries like Nepal. So, my Long term career plan is to help others “unfortunate” ones and heal them and this scholarship will certainly help me in this achieving

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

For some reason, I always go into things with a negative perspective, it’s somewhat of a defense mechanism. My experience as a UCSF Mission Bay Volunteer completely diminished this defense mechanism. At first, I questioned volunteering at UCSF Mission Bay Hospital. I questioned if delivering newspapers and hot beverages would have any effect on patients. I was also scared and sad by the thought of being in the hospital each week and seeing how sick and upset people are. The main reason I wanted to become a volunteer was to gain an experience in the medical field. Little did I know, I would gain a lot more from being a UCSF volunteer. I never really thought I would form relationships with patients, visitors, and staff.…

Throughout my high school experience, the one memory I remember the most that helped me the most would have to be the time I interned at a local non-profit, Lettuce Live Well. I decided that I needed to encounter more challenges in my life; as if my life wasn’t challenging enough. I decided to work with a non-profit because I knew I would get all the experience I can get while getting to work head on with the local community; this was what made it all worth it. The one place that I found I can get the most experience while still connecting with the local community was an organization call Lettuce Live Well.…

At the age of 10, my parents encouraged me to volunteer as an altar server in the church. Good thing they did because this helped me to overcome stage fright and to see life from a bigger perspective, a world where everyone deserves a good quality of life and freedom. The high point of this lesson came when I participated in World Youth Day in Poland in 2016. I encountered many cultures through…

During the summer before my senior year of high school, I was involved in one of the most influential opportunities I had ever encountered. I was given the chance to volunteer my time at Schneck Medical Center. I chose to volunteer in the rehabilitation department; this helped fuel my desire to want to become a physical therapist. While at the rehabilitation center, I got involved in multiple positions that taught me how to be a better leader and how to successfully use teamwork. Working in the office taught me leadership roles. While in the office, I had to check the patients in for their appointments and paged therapists for their appointments. This position showed me how to take charge and make sure that things in the rehabilitation center…

At first I was very nervous to apply as a volunteer and had doubts about being hired. After a long process of applications, interviews, and trainings, I was assigned to work at 6-CD on Geriatric floor. While I was volunteering there I met with different people, nurses, doctors, and pharmacy technicians. Seeing the pace of work they work in made me realize how important it is to work in healthcare. For me, the most significant issue was to get the used to patients who have passed away. I have seen a situation where a nurse and a doctor telling a family member that their father has passed away. At first I hesitated and asked myself if I am brave enough to do the same in future. As I volunteered there I realized I got used to everything, I was able to handle…

I was involved in many service learning experiences all throughout highschool. I was on National Honors Society and we would ring bells for Salvation Army and adopt children around Christmas time. We often volunteered at schools to help watch children, while parents were receiving help in finding careers or when they were being helped in some other manner. However, my favorite service learning that I was involved in was helping coach Special Olympics. This service learning is one of the reasons I am becoming a teacher, and one of the main reasons why my focus is Special Education. I coached my team in soccer, basketball, and track. I loved every minute of it. I spent more time with those kids than I have with any other service learning combined. I coached them starting my sophomore year all the way until I left for college. It was hard leaving my team and I am upset that I cannot go back and see them more often. Service learning has made a huge impact on my life and is something that everyone should become involved with. When you find that one cause that you are passionate about helping with it can transform your life like it did…

All throughout school I have participated in many clubs and organizations that have not only molded me as a person, but have helped me to develop responsibility, and leadership skills. Currently I am an active member of National Honor Society, and DECA. Both of these organizations, provided by my high school, encourage leadership, volunteer work, and have high expectations for behavior, and grades. Being in National Honor Society has shown me to continually do for others in need. There are always opportunities to get involved with the community, and even create drives for things like stuffed animals, and blankets for children who are sick in the hospital, and “Care Catties” for cancer patients, which include tissues, water bottles, hard candy, and lotion. DECA is another organization I am involved in at Frenship High School. DECA is a business organization for high school marketing students looking to learn, develop and compete in a competitive event. I have been a member since my sophomore…
