Definition of Terms The following terms were defined for the readers to have a better understanding of the reserch paper. Active constituent. It refers to the component of the plant responsible for the exhibitory activity of the drug.1 Agar. It is gelatinous colloidal extractive of a red alga (as of the genera Gelidium, Gracilaria, and Eucheuma) used especially in culture media or as a gelling and stabilizing agent in foods.2 Agar-well diffusion method.3 It is a method of bioassay wherein wells are cut in seeded agar and the sample is then introduced directly into the wells. After incubation, the diameter of the clear zone around the well is measured and compared against zones of inhibition produced by the solution of known concentration of standard antibiotics or antifungal. Anti-fungal property. This refers to the property of a substance to inhibit the growth of fungi causing skin diseases.4 Aspergillus niger. A species common in soil which can cause severe or persistent otomycosis; it has been implicated in allergic aspergillosis.5 Aspergillosis. A disease cause by Aspergillus species, marked by inflammatory granulomatous lesions in the skin, ear, orbit, nasal sinuses, lungs, and sometimes bones and meningitis.6 Candida albicans. It is a diploid fungus (a form of yeast), which is capable of mating but not of meiosis, and a casual agent of opportunistic oral and genital infections in humans.7 Candidiasis. This refers to the infection by a yeastlike fungus that invades mucous membrane and sometimes skin in various parts of the body.8 Culture. This refers to microorganisms that grow and multiply in a container of culture medium.9 Culture media. Any liquid or solid preparation made specifically for the growth, storage, or transport of microorganisms or other types of cells.
