Introduction:

In this lab it was studied what differences were present in VO2 Max according to the many variables for females and males. VO2 max is defined by the maximum amount of oxygen utilized during extreme exercise. It is known as the best indicator to the efficiency of athletes or persons cardiovascular capabilities during fitness. It is important to know the general VO2 max of an athlete because, philosophically of course, the more oxygen used during exercise, the more ATP that is produced. This translates into; the more oxygen that can be absorbed by the body, the more energy that is produced through cellular respiration, and in turn, an athlete would heighten the intensity of the workout for a longer period of time becoming a better athlete. The VO2 Max of a person can be affected by mass, time it took to walk necessary distance, and heart rate. Each variable is in turn varied be age and gender. The greater the value for VO2 Max the greater the efficiency of the cardiovascular system. VO2 max plays a major role in the aerobic energy system because an increased VO2 max permits more oxygen to the lungs which increases the amount of mitochondria available. On the mitochondria matrix is where 32 of the 36 ATP molecules are made and stored. This means that after 30 second of strenuous exercise, the aerobic system becomes the primary source of energy for the body and with VO2 max supplying the most energy, it permits the body to continue. All data that was collected was from people within the same age group, so it was decided that age would be removed from the results. Results were compared between men and females because of the different biological differences that can cause large variances in VO2 Max as variables increase or decrease. All data was acquired from classmates whom gathered personal data and released it for the use of this lab.

    The Wingate Anaerobic Test is used to evaluate anaerobic cycling performance. This study was undertaken to determine whether there is a relationship between peak power and fatigue index for endurance (n=9) vs power (n=4) athletes. A total of 13 subjects, including 8 males and 5 females, were included in the study. The subjects were divided into sporting types, such as endurance and power. Data collected from the Wingate test included peak power (W), mean power (W), time to peak (S), minimum power (W) and fatigue index (%).     The main aim of the practical was to assess, what affects did light exercise have on the systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart and respiration rate, tidal volume, minute volume and percentage of gas. The readings were taken before exercise, during exercise and after exercise. Blood pressure is defined as the amount of pressure exerted on the vessels walls, during blood flow. Blood pressure can be measured using a sphygmomanometer. The upper value indicates the systolic pressure; this is the highest level of pressure obtained. This is usually 120mm Hg in healthy adult. The diastolic blood pressure is the pressure achieved before the aortic valves reopen, which is usually between 70- 80mm (Barbara, J.C. 2005). The heart rate is the number of beats that is pumped by the heart per minute. It’s measured by taking the pulse rate. Respiratory rate is the number of breath exhaled and inhaled in a single breath. Respiratory rate can be measured simply by observing the person’s chest and stomach rise and fall. It is usually measured in breath per minute. Tidal volume is the amount of air inhaled or exhaled in a single breath. In an average human, the tidal volume is about 0.5litres, while the lungs can hold up to ten times more than this.     Maximal oxygen consumption (VO₂max) is an excellent indicator of a person’s physical fitness level. It can also be used for many other things including diagnostic tools for physicians. In this study, two different methods of collecting maximal oxygen uptake scores were compared. The first being the predicted VO₂max score attained via the Rockport test and the second being indirect calorimetry VO₂max score attained through cycle ergometer and an attached metabolic cart. Ten males and nine females of similar ages participated in both the Rockport and Indirect Calorimetry tests. It was found that the Rockport predicted tests significantly overestimated the VO₂max scores for males by 14% and females by 16% possibly due to the variability the test is subjected to. The Indirect Calorimetry was therefore deemed the more accurate test.     Possibly the most imperative public health challenge for the United States today is the obesity epidemic the population has. This obesity epidemic, is linked to an array of costly and debilitating health consequences. The widespread challenge of obesity and the health problems and concerns that go with that is an American public health problem. FDA’s approval of two new medications that can help to decrease some of the obesity , decrease some of the chronic diseases associated with obesity, and decrease the costs associated with obesity.     The effect of exercise/physical activity on pulse, blood pressure, and respiration rate was tested on biology students. The results of the experiment showed that each of these parameters is affected after engaging in 2 minutes of physical activity. We found that average pulse, mean arterial pressure, and respiratory rate were all higher in males than in females. But, it was also found that women have a longer time to recovery for all these parameters. The reasons for higher pulse, MAP and blood pressure, and respiratory rate could be because on average men have an overall higher normal blood pressure than women. Also, I would assume that a reason women have a longer recovery time than men could be due to hormonal differences. Factors not recorded that could have affected outcomes of the experiment could be that the sample size and distribution, human error of calculation, and mechanical error.…

    The human body operate on three energy systems: Phosphate Energy System, (ATP/CP or CP SPLITTING), Lactic Acid Energy System (Anaerobic Glycolysis) and Aerobic Energy System (Oxygen System). ATP is when an enzyme splits one of the three phosphate molecules from Adenosine Triphosphate and this releases large amounts of energy that the muscle fibres use to create movement, this turns ATP into Adenosine di-phosphate (ADP), However, only a small amount of ATP is stored within the muscles cells, about 10-15 seconds and takes 2-3 minutes to fully replenish. When ATP is depleted the body turn to anaerobic Glycolysis for energy. This process breaks down glycogen and glucose (Sugar and Fat) to produce energy. This process creates a by-product called ‘pyruvic acid’ which converts into lactic acid if there is insufficient oxygen circulating in the muscles. If Lactic acid accumulates, the process of anaerobic glycolysis slows down, resulting in fatigue. This energy system takes 20-60 minutes depending on the fitness level to remove the accumulated lactic acid after maximal exercise.
