ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Robbins, S., Bergman,R., Stagg, I., & Coulter, M. (2012). Management roles. French Forest NSW 2086: Pearson Australia
In this book Robbins et al. review the management roles that refers to specific categories of managerial behaviour and the expectations that are associated with being the person in that role. The authors in this book describe the managerial roles based on Mintzberg’s ten management roles to emphasize the readers about the roles. The data provided focuses on describing the expectations and responsibilities from managers. This book is useful to my research topic, as Robbins et al. summarizes that there are three types of managerial roles including the description and examples. The main limitations of the book is that the data provided was restricted to ten managerial roles, thus the authors emphasizes each of the management roles clearly. This book is very useful for my studies on the roles of a manager.

In this journal article, theres an emphirical study of 225 managers examining the effect of the managers level in the hierarchy and functional area on the extent Mintzberg’s managerial roles are required by managerial jobs. The author use data that were gathered from a sample of 225 managers who were employed with a variety of different Southern California private sector firms. The research focuses on the effect of level in the hierarchy and the functional area have on the extent various roles or role groups that are required by managerial jobs. This article is useful to my research topic, as Larry provides analysis of variance for each managerial role according to the level in the hierarchy produces seven roles with significant overall differences. The main limitation of the article is that the analysis was restricted to seven roles of

Managing cultural diversity: opportunities and challanges for Northern Ireland hoteliers. International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, 19(2), 120-132 In this journal article Devine et al. emphasizes that cultural diversity is important for the twenty-first century hotel industry due to high levels of mobility between and across continents which impacts both upon work and society. The authors use data gained from interviews with hospitality employers in Northen Ireland to explore opportunities and challanges faced by hospitality employers in accommodating a culturally diverse workforce in Northern Ireland. Their research focuses on the potential of international workers as an invaluable new source of labour for the hospitality industry. The article is useful to my annotated bibliography, as Devine et al. provides all the data needed to complete the annotated bibliography. The main limitations of the article is that future research could analyse the role of multicultural management in assuring business benefits associated with cultural diversity thus the authors gained information from the in-depth interviews showed evidence that integrating cultural diversity into an organisation is not an easy process, but must be part of a long-term strategy to be effective. Cynthia, M. P. & Alan, W. L. (1983). Academy of Management Journal. Managerial Work: the influence of hierarchical level and functional specialty, 26(1), 170-177. In this journal article Cynthia et al. analyze the importance of Mintzberg’s managerial roles based by hierarchical level, reviews the managerial roles by job function and skill importance by job function. The authors use data gained from the questionnaires that were mailed to managers and executives in service and manufacturing firms in Southern California to analyze the differences of hierarchical levels of the 11 managerial roles. Their research focuses on the 11 managerial roles. This article is useful to my annotated bibliography because Cynthia et al. provided all the needed data to accomplish this annotated bibliography. The main limitation of the article is that the survey sample was restricted to managers in Southern California, thus the authors indicate that hierarchical level contributes to differences in the rated importance of the managerial roles. This article is useful for my annotated bibliography assignment. Belinda, J. B., Katarina, F. (2003). Crime & Law, Disordered personalities at work, 11(1), 17-32. In this journal article Belinda et al. classifies disordered personalities at work based on personalities. The authors use data gained from senior business managers and chief executives from leading UK British companies to analyze the personalities at work of the managers and executives. Their research focuses on comparing the personalities of business managers. This article is useful for my annotated bibliography because Belinda et al. provided all the needed data to finish the annotated bibliography. The main limitation of the article is that the survey was restricted to business managers in UK British companies, thus the research shows that a paranoid person has the most disordered personalities at work and on the other hand a passive-aggresive personality has the least. This article is useful to my annotated bibliography assignment

LAU Navy Personnel Research and Development Center The picture of the manager as a refiective planner, organizer, leader, and controller (Fayol, 1916) recently has come under strong attack (Lau « & Pavett, 1980; McCall & Segrist, 1980; Mintzberg, 1980). In his description of managerial work, Mintzberg (1980) concluded that the manager's job can be described in terms of 10 roles within 3 areas—interpersonal, informational, and decisional—that are common to the work of all managers. Subsequent research has supported the generalizability of these role descriptions in public and private sector organizations and in lower and middle level managerial positions (Alexander, 1979; Kurke & Aldrich, 1979; Whitely, 1978). The purpose of the present paper is to examine the influence of hierarchical level and functional specialty on managerial roles and required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Mintzberg (1980) proposed that differences in managerial work involve the relative importance of the roles across hierarchical level and functional specialty. Chief executive officers (CEOs) focus considerable attention on external roles (e.g., liaison, spokesperson, figurehead) that link the environment with the organization. At lower levels of the organization, however, work is more focused, more short term in outlook, and the characteristics of brevity and fragmentation are more pronounced. As a result, the external managerial roles are relatively less important and real-time internal roles (e.g., disturbance handler, negotiator), concerned with daily operating problems and maintaining the workfiow, become relatively more important.
