Violence and Sex in Advertising
VIOLENCE AND SEX IN ADVERITISING

Violence and Sex in advertising is a controversial issue in American society. Some think that this type of advertising is not an issue while others believe it can be a major issue. While most people know what violence and sex in advertising contain, I believe it’s important to define what it really is. Violence and Sex in advertising can be defined as any advertisement that depicts some type of nudity whether is be partial or complete while also insinuating some type of violence. Although sex in advertising has been around for decades, have the advertisers gone to far by incorporating violence into the ads?
As we know sex is portrayed in almost all advertisements, whether it be from toilet paper to cologne. While many people do not realize sex is even in an advertisement, others have strong feelings against it. Although violence and sex gains the consumers attention it doesn’t actually sell products. Many ads that depict violence and sex usually portray both men and women in a demeaning way. Fashion ads are notorious for using violence and sex in advertising and they do it in a way that that it becomes more of a luxury element and glamorizes sexual violence. However when people see these ads they don’t actually remember the product being advertised because they are concentrating more on the violence and sex than they are on the product itself.
In Brad Bushman’s article, “Violence and Sex in Television Programs Do Not Sell Products in Advertisements”, he explores the issue of sex and violence in television programs and their effect on the consumer’s memory for products in commercials. In this study, people in the age range between 18 and 54 watched television programs that contained violence, sex, both, or neither. Within each program there was 12 of the same ads that were shown with unfamiliar brands since consumers have brand loyalty. The results showed that by inserting an ad in a program with violence or sex it

When advertisements didn’t have that much sexual activity and now there are condom commercials and such that are on regular television channels. This is having a huge negative impact in the way that it is teaching young children. In Kilbourne article, “Two Ways A Woman Can Get Hurt: Advertising And Violence,” Kilbourne says, “Sex in advertising is more about disconnection and distance then connection and closeness” (Kilbourne 459). Mark Crispin Miller also states in his article, “Getting Dirty,” that “They take pains to analyze the culture which they help to sicken, and then, with much wit and cynicism, use their insights in devising their small dramas” (Miller 132). This advertisement is made clear that makers are making everything more sexual. For example with the Trojan advertisement “Two Times” the couple is yelling in the store because it can hold two times better than a regular condom. As they are yelling at the top of their lungs and throwing their arms up in joice as they are taking almost all of the boxes off of the shelf and into the cart that they have. Then they run out of the store without getting anything else, trying to hurry to get home. This saying that they are excited that it works two times better and they can’t wait to try it. (“Trojan- Two Times.”) Another advertisement that has sexual context is the Doritos commercial, keep yo’ hands off my momma. The mom invites her date in the house and starts to walk into the other room. The man was looking at the woman's butt because she was wearing a tight fitting mini skirt. When the mom walks into her room the mom’s date takes a Dorito and the boy slaps him and says “keep your hands off my momma, keep your hands off my Doritos” (“Doritos Commercial - Keep Yo' Hands Off My Momma!”). Yes the one advertisement was about a condom but they both were involved with sex. This could be very problematic because it is…

Kilbourne’s major claim in “Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt” is that advertising has reached a point where bodies are portrayed as objects thereby normalizing attitudes that lead to sexual aggression. Right away the readers are able to trust and respect the word of the author because of the italicized introduction included prior to her actual argument. We learn that for the majority of Kilbourne’s career she trained and educated others in advertising, and right now is a professor at Wellesley College. “She has produced award-winning documentaries on images of women in ads (Killing Us Softly, Slim Hopes) and tobacco advertising (Pack of Lies)” (417). She was also part of the National Advisory Council on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and as of today she works with the Massachusetts Governor’s Commission on Sexual and Domestic Abuse. With all this experience in the field of advertising and abuse, it becomes almost impossible to question Kilbourne’s credibility and therefore serving as the piece’s ethical appeal.…

In “Two Ways a Woman Can get Hurt: Advertising and Violence,” the author Jean Kilbourne describes how advertising and violence is a big problem for women. Corporate representatives justify selling and marketing for a product by how a woman looks. Kilbourne explains how the media is a big influence on how men perceive women. Kilbourne tries to prove her point by bashing on advertising agencies and their motives to successfully sell a product. Kilbourne’s affirmation towards advertisements leaves you no doubt that she is against them.…

An advertiser’s main goal is to make money by any means necessary. Therefore, it is no surprise that advertisements in the media today are preying upon young women’s insecurities and producing more and more advertisements that show how sex sells in the media. Throughout virtually any magazine or image in the media, a reader will find more women than men shown in the advertisements. Some of these advertisements include women interacting with men in a sexual manner, women wearing the slightest bit of clothing, if any, and women posing in provocative ways to sell a certain product. Virtually all of these advertisements and media images portray women who are extremely thin, sexy, and seductive in order to sell the products to either male or female consumers. Interestingly, the male consumer products that are advertised include women either being promiscuous with other women, or with men, while female consumer products only sometimes include men, yet nevertheless portray women seductively, beautifully, and in a way that appeals to men. The above collage helps showcase how advertisers use the idea that “sex sells” as a way to objectify women and hold them to the highest standards of beauty, thinness, and attractiveness to men, while simultaneously suggesting that in order for products to sell, women must sell the products in a sexual manner.…

Advertisements are an everyday part of our lives, whether we look at them subconsciously or consciously they influence us. Imagine how many ads you have seen in your lifetime and how they have affected you over time. “Two Way a Woman Can Get Hurt” by Jean Kilbourne is an article about how the objectification of women in advertising can lead to violence because ads shows a truth and this truth is that women are more likely to get abused. Jean Kilbourne successfully attempts to inform women that objectifying people in advertisement makes violence seem acceptable by using logos and pathos. However, her weakness is that she writes with too many hasty generalizations and also with some post hoc.…

In our competitive world of business and products, the sale is the highest goal for the companies and the most effective so far tool to raise it is throughout the advertisement. The sellers are willing to pay a big money for a short message that will be watched by the potential viewers. The industry consider an add as effective when brings to the sale of the product. Nevertheless, in the world where the potential financial resources of viewers are limited, the immediate sale of the product will only occur if a specific add win over tens or hundreds of others watched at the same day by the same viewer. Therefore, the advertisement must be original and appealing to be able to persuade the viewers to buying the product. Another problem for advertisement is the limited memory of the viewers. For that reason, the marketing people concentrate on creating images that will not be easily forgotten. If the add drew the attention of the viewer there is a big chance the product for gaining a prospective buyer. The easiest way to do that of is to link the product with the ideas that all people are familiar or the opposite: the ideas that will shock the viewers. Therefore, the sex and attributes of gender as well as violence are so widely used in a modern world of advertisement. The advertisement researchers know that neutral scenes do not stay in our memory as long as violence and sex scenes.…

In her essay, “ Two Ways A Women Can Get Hurt”, Jean Kilbourne - an award-winning author and educator who is best known for her works about media images effects on young people- emphasizes how violence ( specifically sexualized violence ) in our culture is present through the media, which she recognizes as a powerful mirror in which society is somehow shaped by. Kilbourne’s analysis suggests that erotism in advertising promotes pornography, which main goal , according to her, is to embraces the idea on people minds that women are objects used to fulfill men’s sexual desire ( Kilbourne 459). The use of the images in the essay serves as evidence to support the author’s message, where she invites the audience to interpret her arguments by applying appeals to reason while they visualize how inhuman and violent some advertisements are. In addition to her thesis, the author emphasizes that some advertisements foster the belief that women reward men with sex when they wear or buy their products ( Kilbourne 459 ). An equally significant aspect mentioned is that these advertisements produce a collateral damage that aims both genders, where individual ideas/actions coming from the images mentioned can be self-harming (Kilborne 467).…

Mass media plays a great part in our lives. Television, newspapers, magazines surround us everywhere every day of our lives. All of them are stuck with different kinds of ads. But how often do we pay attention to the real sense of those ads and the ways the advertisers try to sell various products to us? We see dissoluteness and challenging behavior every day in life and we got so used to it in, at first sight, such small pieces of film, and apparently of our day routine, as advertisement, that we hardly notice the big picture. For over twenty years, Jean Kilbourne has been writing, lecturing, and making films about how advertising affects women and girls. In her essay, "‘The Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt': Advertising and Violence", Kilbourne looks very deep into the connection between abuse and ads. She develops a theory in which she emphasizes dehumanizing women in ads, and shows us what terrible things sometimes can be concealed behind a simple and funny ad, and what consequences it can lead to in the end. As for me, I strongly agree with Kilbourne, and I am convinced, that harmless at first sight, advertisements sometimes turn out to be damaging, violent and insulting, especially with regard to the weak, such as women.…

The article "Advertising and the construction of Violent White Masculinity" points to the controversy of violence and media. It emphasizes that the mainstream debate about media and violence does not emphasis or analyze the most important aspect, namely gender. Katz states that the media illustrates a wrong image of individuals committing crime by calling them 'youth' crimes or 'kids' love. He believes however that the reason why crime is committed 90% by males is due to the masculinity emphasized in our society. He also mentions that there is lack of attention on criminals from majority groups such as Whites but an emphasis by crime conducted by minority groups. The article suggests that research has avoided to explicitly specify the relationship between masculinity and violent behavior by white men has been avoided in research.Katz believes to be able to illustrate some ways to display the hegemonic construction of masculinity that is present in mainstream magazine ads and how these ads help to normalize violent male behavior. Katz suggests that one way violence is normalized is through the movie industry which shows white males engaging in violent actions without being depicted as villains. Moreover, they are regarded as heroes. The boom of the movie industry collided with the instability that was created economically for the White middle-class population. The heroes of the movie industry served as role models enabling the male white population to gain stability with masculine power through size and strength. According to Katz the physical body was the only way to obtain dominance and control for those who did not have economic resources to achieve manhood. Katz mentions another way our society tries to normalize violence in the white middle class, namely through advertisements. As Katz writes the ads are full of depictions of dangerous looking men. He points out the bidirectional relationship between advertisements and other socially accepted events such as…

The average American youth spends 1,500 hours watching television and in those 1,500 hours they will view an average of 20,000 thirty-second commercial advertisements. Norman Herr, Ph.D., Television Statistics (2007), http://www.csun.edu/science/health/docs/tv&health.html. Many of those advertisements include an array of alcoholic beverages, scantily dressed actors or actresses promoting sought-after clothing brands, and popular children stars or cartoon characters promoting fast food chains. Along with the fore-mentioned products there are commercial advertisements promoting violence and unsafe acts. The latest trends in advertisements have led to lower morals, a higher obesity rate, an attitude of materialism, and alcohol consumption amongst America’s youth. There is currently a very toxic relationship between television advertising and American youth.…

Our minds are impressionable. Whether we know it or not, everything we see and experience affects who we are and how we behave. Advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and affects all of us throughout our lives. A study in USA Today states that the average American watches about 26-28 hours of television weekly. In one week, they will see 1080 commercials; In one year, that person will have seen 56,160 commercials on television alone. Advertisements sell so much more than products; they sell values, perceptions of success, sexuality, and perfection. They tell us who we are supposed to be, and how we supposed to act. It is startling, to say the least, when a large majority of our advertisements and media depict, and often glorify, sexual assault and domestic violence against women. Consequently, sexual assault and domestic violence in our society reflect the uprising of seemingly “harmless” sexualized views and presented in our media.…

What does sex in the media really do? Is it just a selling tool or does it affect us in a greater way? Networks are paying more than they used to for the best time slots and the more risky they can make their commercials the better. For example, advertisers paid $2.3 million for a single 30-s ad airing during Super Bowl XXXVIII (Sutel, 2004). As you can see advertisers truly think that sex is the key, TV and film producers believe it and the internet was built on it. But does sex really help sell products? Parker and Furnham (in press) decided to test whether sex really does sell using an experiment with a total of four conditions.…
