The Media, the War, and a World Changed
By Sam Connors The Vietnam War is a time of great strife for the many people affected during the 1960’s. Much of what we know about war is what the media tells us. Media during the Vietnam conflict is important aspect of this time period. It had significant influence on American support of the war. The media created a negative image of the Vietnam War, and was a factor in the end of the war. New media methods made this possible. During the 60’s, the media took on new roles, thus gaining new influence. Media influence was so strong, political leaders have stated their opinion on the media’s influence in Vietnam, and the media has never been given so much freedom since. The media was a very influential part of the Vietnam Conflict. New media methods such as the development of cameras and video created a detailed and complex view of Vietnam. The distribution of information had advanced as well, which brought about early forms of global communication. The development and distribution of the televisio In 1964, 58 percent of America said television; 56 percent, newspapers; 26 percent, radio; and 8 percent, magazines. By 1972, 64 percent said television while the number of respondents who primarily relied on newspapers dropped to 50 percent (Hallin, 1986, p.106). The technology had advanced far enough to give the American public a nearly real-time insight of the war. The men and women gathering this information, the reporters, had also changed from previous world events. Reporters were allowed to be on the front-lines during battles, while previously they’d only been allowed on the fields of war after the battles. Because no military censorship was established, journalists could follow the military into combat and report their observations without formal censorship.     To understand the role the media played in America’s loss in the Vietnam War, you must first realize the significance of the power the media has. The media was America’s eyes and ears in Vietnam. What America and the world watched, read and heard was the medias’ interpretation. This had a string of implications that can best be understood through the ‘media effects model’. Also known as the ‘hypodermic model’, this concept explains the idea that the media ‘”injects” meaning and ideas into the mass audience. They have an unprecedented level of influence that has the ability to shape the audiences opinions and feelings towards something. In this case, the medias coverage of the Vietnam War shaped the American publics feelings towards it. One key development in the beginning of the Vietnam War contributed to the media’s level of influence on the audience. In September 1963, the two major evening news programs switched to 30 minute broadcasts. As the Vietnam War was the biggest ongoing media event at that time, it received increasing coverage.     The analysis of opinion polls from before and after the Tet Offensive demonstrate that US public support for the war had dramatically reduced, most likely as a consequence of media coverage. Before the Tet Offensive, the proportion of Americans who thought of themselves as hawks (pro-war) stood at 60%, but afterwards that number had dropped to 41% . This significant drop in public support could have resulted from the fact that the Vietnam War was the first televised war: “The scope, scale and intensity of the Vietcong Tet Offensive shocked most Americans.     There was a connection between the students and the Vietnam War and it affected them as well. Before the Vietnam War began the American population held Congressmen, Universities, and all other official institutions in high regard. In the 1960s the views began to change, there were two simple view points between students. One side felt as though the U.S. didn’t need to get involved in the War at all, they felt as though it was a losing battle which continued to put burdens on both social and economic and the U.S. needed to back out. However there is always an opposing side and that side saw it fit for the U.S. to be in the War, the students felt that the U.S. got involved for a reason so they need to stay there and finish the job. A lot of protests for the War happened on college campuses. During the years of the War the draft to enlist in the War was instituted in 1942, which states that men and women from the baby boom era were able to go and fight in the War. The men soldier’s and the women nurse. This draft reinforced the concern of the U.S. being involved. Draft and exemptions were available to college students, which stated that if young men and women weren’t in college they could enlist. If students were trying to avoid the War just by attending college, were told about the injustice of the situation and protested as a way to communicate to the government. When graduated from college you could then also enlist in the draft to fight. Two million Americans fought in the War and fifty-eight thousand or more died. As the War continued finances in the U.S. grew. Students protesting showed the emotions of Americans and since there was a lack of support from Americans with protesting it made matters worse.…

Others may think of a grandparent or parent who fought in the grizzly guerilla warfare. Many can still recall their direct experience with the war, whether as a soldier or a civilian. The war in Vietnam does not seem like such distant past to many people, and because of the very personal and possibly tragic memories people have of the war, they are not able to see the big picture: the Vietnamese war affected more than individuals. It affected the economy, social order, and culture of all the nations involved. Planet Earth was far from world peace when the war in Vietnam erupted. Infact, the Cold War, which was an antagonist for the war in Vietnam, had been going on for seven years prior to the conflict in Southeast Asia. Many countries were negatively affected by communist Southeast Asia’s closed economy. When the communist countries in Southeast Asia, adapted their “closed economy” system (Source F), the pre-­existing economic woes of the Cold War were layered with new conflict.
