Video Games and Violence: The Truth Behind the Craze Sweeping Up the Youth
Video games are wondrous. They allow the user to experience a life they may never be able to experience in reality. Becoming a racecar driver, professional football player, or the king of all middle earth is as easy as popping in a disc. Video games are not a new form of entertainment, although the video games being played today are nothing like the Atari games that once used to dominate. They have become more realistic and violent than many believe they should have, mainly because they are falling into the laps of the youth. Hot topics of discussion range from whether or not video games have led to an increase in youth violence, which was brought together by researcher and writer Henry Jenkins, as well as an opposing view by the MSNBC writer Kristin Kalning. Secondly, whether or not they are marketed towards children was strongly argued by researcher Regina Holtman conducting experiments by having minors purchase mature games. Third, arguing whether or not the games are socially isolating, and Fourth, how gender is portrayed in the games which were both heavily argued by a team of researchers and other writers, some of which are political writers. Although there are strong reasons why there should be no violence in video games, there are many opinions on the subject as well as ways to deal with these problems.
One of the biggest issues with the gaming world today is that many feel that violent video games have led to an epidemic of youth violence. In his article “Reality Bytes: Eight Myths About Video Games Debunked,” Henry Jenkins explains how the current perception of the use of violent video games by our children is that they are corrupting the minds of the youth and causing them to commit violent crimes. He states that this is not the case, writing “The rate of juvenile violent crime in the United States is at a 30-year low.

While many parents scoff at letting their children watch violent movies, they often consent to buying violent video games for their teenagers without checking the industry ratings. Researchers contend that a link exists between violent video games and real-life violence in teenagers and young adults. Violent images don't necessarily create violent children, but gamers learn that violence is an accepted means to solve problems, and they perfect shooting skills as though they were handling real weapons. Even though games can teach children valuable coordination skills, parents and caregivers need to make sure that their children only view age-appropriate content and are made aware of the difference between on-screen actions and socially acceptable behavior in the real world.…

Controversial subjects comes in all forms and fashions and sometimes presents disagreements within. The controversial subject that I have chosen has been around for many years and have allowed individuals to take a stand for their opinions about the situation. “The debates on video games violence has arguably been narrow, in that it assumes that such games have only negative effects and ignores the possibility of positive effects”. (Ferguson, C.J, 2007) Within the Article it provides stability and creditability in the problem of violence in video games. The Article is called Negative Potential of Video Games by Russell Sabella, but instead of focusing on the facts of how and why this is an issue it provides facts the boys demonstrate these acts far more and singling this gender out within the article. With the validity of this important information that needs to motivate our youth this article depicts that boys will see and demonstrate more violent acts. Understanding that the main focus should be the youth, only boys were singles out and this article also assumed that boys show a greater tendencies to be aggressive due to the motivation of video games “This is especially true for boys who seem to show greater tendencies to be aggressive and to seek out higher media violence exposure”. (Russell A. Sabella Ph.D., 2013) Video games contributing to youth violence and have demonstrated negative actions which caused support groups to stop the creation, sales, or renting to individuals under the age of 18 due to negative acts of harm represented by the youth. The influence that the video games present to the youth consist of aggressive behavior, violence, school shootings and even bullying. “Recent highly publicized school shootings; reports of gang; young people obsessed with violent video games, movies, and song lyrics; and media prone to…

Video games have always been a great landmark in the history of the human race and how great and advanced they’ve become since their creation. Video games also have their own timeline and certain points in time in which major controversy has arisen. Newscasters have made full reports on how video games are the major contributor to thoughts and actions of violence in the minds of all who have purchased them, either being adults and all the way down to children of all ages. Even though newscasters and reporters may be seen as respected and credible sources this topic has always pinned video games as the culprit but they were never the ones to blame.…

A problem challenging the world today is the scientific linkage to video games and violence in today’s youth. As the mother of a pre-teen boy I chose to investigate the surrounding evidence to educate myself and my peers on this seemingly growing problem which I believe connects violent game play with youth aggression. I hope to learn whether or not the games put out on today’s market need to be removed from the shelves and furthermore, I would like to know if they are teaching the children the wrong things and corrupting their minds at early ages.…

    Video Game Violence

“If video games do increase violent tendencies outside the laboratory, the explosion of gaming over the past decade from 3.2 billion in sales in 1995 to $7 billion in 2003, according to industry figures, would suggest a parallel trend in youth violence. Instead, youth violence has been decreasing.” (Hoerrner 49). A video game is a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or display. Violence is behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something. Some video games have violent and mature content in them. People claim that the violence in video games can cause aggression in people. Others claim that the violence in video games has nothing to do with aggression in people. It is also argued that violence in video games has nothing to do with the rage already existing inside of people. Video games do not cause violence because gamers understand that video games are not real, that video games release daily frustration and are inspiring.…

In my most recent essay I wrote of the violence attributed to video games in light of various shootings and other tragedies that occurred in the past year or so. In this essay I argued that despite their violent content, video games are not completely to blame for acts of violence committed by children. Throughout this essay I tried to convince the reader by, first, establishing my own credibility with video games, then sharing my own experiences with violent games, and providing both empirical data and valuable insight from trusted sources.…

Does playing a video game make you prone to commit real-life violence? This question has been an issue since the very early 90's when violent games like Doom and Wolfenstein were released, but only in the last half a decade or so (mainly since the incident at Columbine, Colorado, 1999 – when it was revealed that the teenage shooters were avid video game players) has it really come to the majority's attention. The key issue that both sides can't agree on is whether people should be allowed to play violent games or not. I think both sides agree that extremely violent video games should not be played by young children, who have a harder time separating reality from fiction; also, the media does indeed only report one side of the argument. There have been numerous studies claiming both that violent games correlate to real-life violence, and that there is little or no such correlation. The problem is that there is no concrete evidence of a causal conclusion between video game violence and real-life violence. If there was such a conclusion, both sides would likely be able to come to an understanding, but as it stands now, they are in a stalemate.…

Since the advent of Violent Video Games (VVGs), they have become more and more popular. Now, VVGs enjoy unprecedented popularity. According to a 2008 Pew Research Center report, 95% of children play video games, and among them, more than half play VVGs (Violent Video Games) (“Violent Video Games and Young People”). A question may be raised: Does VVGs harm people? Many say they don’t. Perhaps they didn’t know many researches show the opposite. VVGs are harmful to both adults and kids because VVGs increase their aggression.…
