Vertigo
Vertigo. Dir. Alfred Hitchcock. Perf. James Stewart, Kim Knovc, Barbara Bel Geddes. Paramount Pictures, 1958.
This film is an Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece, this is truly my opinion. The main characters where: James Stewart who played John “Scottie” Ferguson, the protagonist detective with the police department whom has retired early because of his acrophobia; and Kim Novack the antagonist who plays Madeline Elster the wife of Gavin Elster who hire’s Scottie to follow his wife. Gavin believes that his wife may be possessed by her great grandmother Carlotta. Then there is Barbara Bel Geddes who plays Midge, Scotties ex-fiancé. The films setting were in a rural area in California. The scene where Madeline supposably jumped from the belle tower was a Spanish Mission called Mission San Juan Bautista, and also there was where Madeline attempted suicide by jumping into the San Francisco Bay.
Scottie is in a depression due to his acrophobia that caused the death of a fellow police officer. Midge wants to help but quickly realizes that the only way Scottie is ever going to recover is by having another dramatic episode. Scottie takes on a free-lance job for Gavin Elster to watch his wife he suspects to be possessed by Carlotta her great grandmother. When following her she goes to the museum that has a large picture of Carlotta and watches Madeline sit in front of it on a bench staring at the picture, after a few moments for hours Madeline leaves gets into her car and drives away. Scottie followers her to the San Francisco Bay, she gets out of her car and jumps into the bay. Scottie rescues her and takes her back to his apartment. When Madeline wakes she seems disorientated and wants to know how she got there. Scottie explains and she does not have any memory of the museum or the Bay. Then the phone rings and he goes into the bedroom to answer the phone, it is her husband and he is telling him about the events when Madeline leaves. This scene was produced from the

Rear Window and Vertigo are two Hitchcock films in which the main character shows voyeuristic behavior, experiences relationship problems and suffers from some sort of a handicap, be it physical or psychological. Rear Window has to do with a group of peeping toms. As his broken leg heals, wheelchair-bound L.B. Jefferies becomes absorbed with the parade of life outside his window and soon fixates on a mysterious man whose behavior has Jefferies convinced a murder has taken place. Many would believe the main part of the movie is Jefferies and his fiancée Lisa Fremont’s attempt to solve the case of the murder, when in reality, the main plot is the complex relationship between the two. Vertigo has to do with a retired San Francisco detective, John 'Scottie ' Ferguson, suffering from acrophobia who investigates the strange activities of Madeleine Elster, the wife of his friend, who he believes is possessed. As he follows her, he slowly realizes that he has fallen in love with her. After he thinks she has died, the movie makes an unexpected twist revealing the real plot that Madeleine had already been murdered and he had been falling in love with a paid imposter, Judy Barton.…

Alfred Hitchcock is known as a master of the cinematic arts for his preeminent style when designing a setting. The movie depicts a small town, known as Bodega Bay, near the beach in the early 1960s. This town is a peaceful town where nothing disastrous ever happens, and when it does, the inhabitants do not know how to react. The city is somewhat isolated from society and is not well known, causing the credibility of its citizens to be called into question. The main character, Melanie Daniels, calls her father, the owner of a famous newspaper, and tells him that there is a massive attack on the people of the town and it was all orchestrated by birds. Her father thinks that the idea of…

Maxfield suggested that the Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo (1958) could be interpreted as a variant on "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", and that the main narrative of the film is actually imagined by the protagonist, who is left dangling from a building at the end of the film's first scene. This theory is supported by the fact that the first draft of the Vertigo script written by co-screenwriter Samuel A. Taylor is entitled "From among the Dead, or There'll Never Be Another You, by Samuel Taylor and Ambrose…

In both films, Rear Window and Vertigo, film director Alfred Hitchcock requires audiences to put themselves in the position of voyeur as they witness the action of the film through the eyes of the protagonists. Hitchcock introduces to us the meaning of the word voyeurism and the control it can possess over a person. The main characters in both films are voyeurs’ and get their excitement from invading others’ life. Hitchcock was an English-American film director, writer, and producer, whose distinctive style has influenced several generations of filmmakers. In Rear Window and Vertigo, Jeff and Scottie’s lives are affected by voyeurism. Essentially, both men prefer to live by watching rather than live by doing.…
