Verbal and Nonverbal Communication
Communication is a critical function in today’s business society. For me it is very important that I be able to speak and communicate clearly and effectively to my colleagues and leadership team. In order to see our process through, I must communicate and give clear direction and be concise in that direction.
Some of my strengths in verbal communication are giving detailed instructions, speaking clearly and loudly, and being prepared to speak with data and facts. I like to give a clear road map on what I’m asking my team to do. I want to make sure that I don’t leave anyone in the dark or that they don’t miscomprehend the task that I have just assigned to them. It is important that when I assign a task I use the proper tone and vocabulary, so they don’t misunderstand and I won’t have to repeat myself several times. It is vital in my position that I speak and communicate in a professional manner, being professional in the wording and tone I use when speaking to my colleagues. Another of my strengths is speaking with data and facts. I have found it much more relaxing if you are knowledgeable about the topic of discussion. I feel when I research the topic and apply my critical thinking abilities I have a stronger standing communicating back to our team. It increases my self-confidence so I don’t pause between words and I can give a better presentation on the issue.
My weakness in verbal communication is listening and using good vocabulary. I don’t always listen to the other side. I can communicate my given direction; however I don’t always listen to ensure that my direction is the correct path. I have noticed that when I’m hosting a meeting that none of my colleagues will ask questions, which concerns me due to my experience in not being able to listen and then communicate effectively. I have to ask the team for their input and opinions on the subject so I can understand their position better. For my vocabulary, I don’t always use the correct wording and that could

    A touch, making eye contact with someone, or the tone of voice you take when saying something. All of these things make up a big part of how you communicate and interact with other people. These ways of communicating all fall under the category of non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is, “those aspects of communication, such as gestures and facial expressions, that do not involve verbal communication but which may include nonverbal aspects of speech itself, (accent, tone of voice, speed of speaking, etc)” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nonverbal communication) as defined by Dictionary.com. Non-verbal communication makes up most of the ways that we communicate with someone. Non-verbal cues are vital in a conversation. “One study at UCLA indicated that up to 93 percent of communication effectiveness is determined by nonverbal cues. Another study indicated that the impact of a performance was determined 7 percent by the words used, 38 percent by voice quality, and 55 percent by the nonverbal communication.” (http://humanresources.about.com/od/interpersonalcommunicatio1/a/nonverbal_com.htm) A person’s tone of voice plays a big part when giving non-verbal cues. If something is said with a strong tone a voice, the audience may perceive enthusiasm or confidence. Also, that same exact thing could be said in a hesitant tone of voice and the audience could perceive that the speaker is intimidated or nervous.     My first skill is about how I struggle when communicating in verbal presentations. I’m confident when it comes to verbal communication in conversations or interviews.
