Vera Claythorne Character Analysis
The first character that will be analyzed is the character named Vera Claythorne. Originally, she got the invitation to the Island as the secretary to the unknown Mr. Owen, the supposed owner of the Island, which none of the characters are familiar with. Later on, they would discover that Mr. Owen is actually the paradigm for Unknown, who is the person who brought them all together. Like all the other characters, Vera Claythorne also has committed a crime. In her past, she let a little rich boy named Cyril Hamilton, whom she was caring care of, drown while in the ocean, in order for her lover Hugo, his relative, would inherit the money and leave with her. Unfortunately, he is convinced she left the boy to drown and leaves her. Her memories haunt her thought the novel, as she is perhaps the most conscious person of all of them on …show more content…
How emotionally unstable this character is, can be seen though any scene where she is close to the ocean and feels as if her lover Hugo, is standing by her and judging her while the images of the drowned boy haunt her even in her sleep. The most noticeable level of the effect of guilt on her ever growing conscience can be seen here: „ She had come now to the door of her room, Hugo was waiting for her inside- she was quite sure of it. She opened the door... What was that- hanging from the hook in the ceiling? A rope with a noose all ready? And a chair to stand upon- a chair that could be kicked away... That was what Hugo wanted. And of course that was the last line of the rhyme. „ He went and hanged himself and then there were none.“... she climbed up the chair, her eyes staring in front of her like a sleepwalker's... She adjusted the noose round her neck, Hugo was there to see she did what she had to do „ (Chapter 16) From this, it can be seen that even though, she was one of the most intelligent people on

When they came to the mansion they met two other people, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers, who were the cook and butler for their stay and was hired by Mr. Owen. After they all met they realized hat the person who invited them, Mr. Owen, was not present. Almost everybody became suspicious of this and wanted to see him as soon as possible.     Vera Claythorne is a physical education teacher, looking after a little boy named Cyril. Cyril's uncle's name is Hugo. Vera Claythorne and Hugo fell in love. However, there was one thing that got in the way of their marriage, money. Hugo didn't have enough money to get married and support a family. Vera thought she had a plan to solve the problem. For the past couple of days Cyril would say to her "Can I swim out to the island, Mrs. Claythorne? Why can't I swim out to the island?" Vera thought that she could tell Cyril he could swim out to the island, and then she would act as though she never knew that he had left her sight.
