“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”
Ashley Allison
ENG: 225 Introduction to Film
Alene Morrison
Thursday, November 15, 2012

I choose to analyze the clip “I Know What You Can Do”, from the movie “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”. It takes many different people to create a movie. This action packed film was directed by Timur Bekmambetov in 2012. The cast: such as the art director and production designer, use a variety of different methods to set the mood, introduce the characters and create the mise-en-scene of this movie.
The setting of the clip is during the civil war, leading into the rein of our sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln. He finds out that vampires are planning to take over the United States, and makes it his personal mission to eliminate them all. The culture of this time-period is full of racism. The northern part of the country wants equality for everyone, while the South still wants slavery to be in effect. The clip takes place in an old mansion, owned by a group of vampires who want to kill Abraham, the vampire slayer.
The production designer Francois Audouy is the person in charge of the overall look of the movie, while the art director does most of the lighting and electric. The clip starts off showing Abraham Lincoln as he swings an axe around in circles. The room is glowing only by the dim light of candles (I Know, 2012). It intensifies the spookiness and mystery of what is to happen in this huge plantation house. Abraham is always shown in the light during this clip, as a way of exemplifying his goodness against the horrific creatures he is about to destroy. A drop of blood comes down from the ceiling and lands right on the tip of his axe, and then the vampires start to attack. The filmmaker uses a dark atmosphere lighted only by candles as a way of showing the setting as dangerous and putting the audience on the edge of their seats as the main character fights off twenty vampires at one time.
The cinematographer, Caleb Deschanel,

Tim Burton uses many different cinematic techniques to make his movies have a certain approach. In this movie he uses low key lighting to make the characters look mysterious. For example, when Edward is crouching in the corner when peg first meets him, Tim Burton uses a dark and gloomy lighting to make Edward look creepy. Another cinematic technique Burton likes to use is non-diegetic music to show how the scene should make you feel. For instance, when Peg is driving Edward through the neighborhood, there is a cheerful and delightful music playing to show the difference between the mansion and the neighborhood. Finally Tim Burton uses low angle to show something look bigger. For example, When Edward is cutting the bushes they use a low angle to show how large and amazing his hands are. This movie was definitely a great example of Tim Burton's…

The concept of film form centers around the idea of effectively engaging an audience. Motion pictures that properly adhere to form are abundant in sensory, emotive, and thought-provoking elements. While form in any creative medium is made up of a vast number of different components, basic understanding can be met by following five general principles: function, similarity and repetition, difference and variation, development, and unity. In addition, this formal system categorizes a films ' elements as either narrative or stylistic. The film _Scott Pilgrim vs. the World_ is exemplary in its effective use of film form by not only involving its audience, but catering to each of the five principles of form.…

Film is an important part of culture, because it combines aspects such as song, story-telling, art and expression. The scenes of a film come together to create harmony and to express an idea. The Shining is a film that expressed Stephen King’s novel in a cinematic way. In every scene from this film there are indications of formalist techniques, when viewed all together as a movie, the idea of this movie being formalist is ensured. The movement of the camera when we follow Danny down the hallways, the creepy soundtrack and the editing when Danny sees the two girls; every one of these make up a formalist film.…

First of all, Lincoln starts his speech talking about what happened during the past with strong diction. He talks about the basis on which the country was found-liberty and equality. For example, he used “Fourscore and seven years ago” instead of 87 years ago. The former phrase…

In film class this past week, we learned that there are many cinematic techniques used in films that contribute to the way a film is portrayed by an audience. We had the pleasure of watching a film directed by Orson Wells In 1941 called “Citizen Kane”. I am glad that this particular film was the film of choice to demonstrate some of these techniques. The movie “Citizen Kane” uses each cinematic technique in a way that is obvious to the viewer. I have chosen five of the sixteen techniques that I learned this week, which made an impact on the way that I personally viewed this film. As an armature film observer, “Citizen Kane” is the perfect film of choice to begin analyzing some of these techniques.…

The film starts off with the bloody Civil War playing out, North and South at war. Minutes later we are then taken to a part where we see two Black soldiers having a conversation with Lincoln stating how they wish all men were equal and would love to see a black man as colonel in the army. At the time slavery was still being practiced and many blacks experienced harsh treatment from whites, whether it was pertaining to laws or how they were treated on a daily basis. From that point and onwards the movie basically gets into Lincoln working on the amendment and dealing with his fellow cabinet members.…

Why are we still celebrating and reading this speech 150 years later? Because Lincoln spoke the truth about human nature and that human-truth lasts forever. There’s no new theory or alternate truth. What Lincoln said 150 years ago still rings true today and will forever ring true for as long as human civilization continues to exist. Man’s inhumanity to man has paved the way for a…
