According to Alexandra Sifferlin and other scientists, “the saturated fat and cholesterol that clogs arteries, vegetarians may be at a lower risk for chronic diseases overall,” which then will decrease the chance of dying young (Sifferlin, “7 Reasons Vegetarians Live Longer”). Due to the fact that too much comsumption of meat can clog these systems, vegetarians decide to illiminate the entire food to be safe and consume other proteins instead. Another risk that will be lowered is heart disease. When the arteries are clogged in the heart, it can oftem stop working or even stop all together, and can also call for a heart transplant. Eating the right foods such as fruits and vegetables, can help any person better their chances and lowering the risk of having a bad heart. Later researchers decided to study the risk of different types of cancer in a vegetarian and realized that they had “ a low risk for cancer overall and discovered that a vegetarian diet may have protective benefits” (Sifferlin, “7 Reasons Vegetarians Live Longer”). Meat eaters have more of a risk of getting certain cancers due to what is in the meat and how it is used in the body. Being overweight can be a factor into any disease or cancer. How much a person weighs has to do sometimes with how much fat is on the body and when eating meat, an abundant amount of fat can be built up. People who are obese normally have a higher risk of getting diabetes which is what eating meat can cause. Being a vegetarian will not completely illiminate the risk of diabetes, but it will lower the chance of it happening. Overall being vegetarian has many benefits if that person gets enough nutrients and takes care of their body. As well as lower the risk of harmful things in the body, vegetarians also think about the treatment of animals and the cost of the meat…

Those who follow the Vegan diet, more commonly known as “vegans”, believe that people should not consume or use products made from animals. They think humans should coexist with animals and feel like an animal’s life should be treated with respect. For this reason, the diet is mostly plant based and the majority of vegans end up consuming fewer calories than normal. This has given the vegan diet a reputation as more of a weight loss plan ("Vegan Diet" par. 2) but some do it strictly for health (Forks Over Knives).…

Being vegan is a really challenging thing to do. It cuts out most of if not everyday food. It’s not just a way to eat but it’s a lifestyle choice. It affects what you wear, how you think, and what you buy. A lot of people have questions about this choice and why thousands of people all over the world are starting to become vegans. A new Oxford University study states that “Cutting your meat and dairy intake can improve your health—and quite possibly save your life.” People ask what the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan is. Vegetarian diets, which contain no meat (beef, pork, poultry, or fish and shellfish), are naturally low in saturated fat, high in fiber, and full of vitamins, minerals, and cancer-fighting compounds. A multitude of scientific studies have shown that vegetarian diets have remarkable health benefits and can help prevent certain diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. We encourage vegetarian diets as a way of improving general health and preventing diet-related illnesses. Vegan diets, contain no animal products (meat, dairy, eggs, or other animal products), are even healthier than vegetarian diets. Vegan diets contain no cholesterol and even less fat, saturated fat, and calories than vegetarian diets because they exclude dairy and eggs. Scientific research shows that health benefits increase as the amount of food from animal sources in the diet decreases, making vegan diets the healthiest overall. Another popular question is what do vegans eat? Vegan diets tend to be more colorful and varied than meat-based diets—vegans can enjoy just about every dish a meat-eater can by cooking with veggie burgers, "ham," "hot dogs," and "turkey" made out of soy and with less familiar staples such as tofu, tempeh, textured vegetable protein (TVP), and seitan, or wheat gluten. These can be added to spaghetti, soups, salads, lasagna, stir-fries, and chili. Many vegans take advantage of delicious ethnic cuisine, such as Chinese,…

With science and technological advancement in medical care, medical experts are able to find vaccines and medicines to prevent acute diseases, but the only way people can prevent chronic diseases is by changing their life style choices (Myers). “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.” Paul McCartney stated in a video he made to motivate switching to vegetarianism. Like Paul McCartney, many people today are switching to a vegetarian or even vegan diet and with good reason. Environmentalists and scientists have shown, through extensive research, that meat industries are over-producing animal products, and in addition, are a major cause of environmental problems such as global warming and world hunger. Another good motive is the unimaginable cruelty these animals suffer, that represents torture one could never imagine for their own pets or peers. As importantly, being a vegetarian has numerous health benefits. Animal products contain bacteria and contaminants that have been shown to cause fatal illnesses. Cutting meat and animal by-products from your diet and adopting a vegan one is a healthy lifestyle choice because it can reduce a number of environmental impacts, it makes for a better ethical choice, and it can improve your personal health greatly.…

In a study completed in 2003, it was found that approximately 4% of Canadians follow a vegetarian diet (“American Dietetic Association,” 2003). This type of diet concentrates on the consumption of plants for food. The most common type is the lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, which restricts the intake of meat, poultry and fish, but allows the intake of eggs and dairy products (Vegetarian Diet, 2009). Many people become vegetarians because they feel it is wrong to kill or eat animals, but there are some that decide to follow a vegetarian diet because of its health benefits. One of these benefits includes attaining and maintaining a healthy body weight. Data has shown that people, who follow a vegetarian diet, are able to significantly improve their body weight. However, there are many risks associated with doing this. Despite the associated risks, it is believed that vegetarian diets are beneficial to weight loss as they improve overall biochemical, dietary and anthropometric measurements.…

Vegetarian diets are based on cereals, whole grains, pulses, nuts, vegetables and fruits. Lacto-ovo-vegetarians do not consume any meat, poultry or fish but include eggs and dairy products in their diets. Vegans do not consume any food obtained from animals. Other vegetarian diets include fruitarians and macrobiotic diets that are more restricted. Reference to vegetarian diets usually implies lacto-ovo-vegetarians. A number of reasons can be attributed to preference for a vegetarian diet such as religious belief, economic status, personal health issues, environmental and ecological concerns. Vegetarian diets are typically higher in fiber, vitamin C and folate while lower in saturated fat and cholesterol. As can be expected a number of health benefits are attributed to vegetarian diet. Population studies have shown an inverse relation between vegetarian diet practices and incidence of cancer, cardiovascular disease and total mortality1. A number of epidemiological studies have demonstrated the low incidence of obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure) heart diseases, diabetes, cancer etc in vegetarians as compared to meat eaters. People who consume fish and other sea food also demonstrate some advantages of vegetarian diets. 2A 24% decrease in incidence of Ischemic heart disease (IHD) was found among vegetarians as compared to non- vegetarians. Plant foods, which are a good source of fiber, lower cholesterol levels, both low density lipoprotein (LDL) and total cholesterol levels. Lower rates of colon, prostate cancer and breast cancer are also observed in vegetarians. Phytochemicals are excellent anti-oxidants which act by metabolizing carcinogens in the body and lowering the incidence of cancer. Some other phytochemicals such as lignin and phytoestrogens in soy lower the incidence of hormone dependant cancers, such as prostate and breast cancer. This can explain the lower incidence of breast cancer in Asian women who consume soy…
