Vegetarian Resource Group Website Analysis
My interest in evaluating the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) website relates to my experience with vegetarianism. I do not enjoy meat and have a deep passion for eating foods that support my health as well as environmental health. I hoped to find a website presenting accurate and helpful information on planning a vegetarian diet as well as recipes and information on vegetarian foods. The VRG website promotes the organization’s mission to inform society about vegetarian and vegan diets in correlation with ecological, ethical, health, and nutritional issues. The website exceeds my expectations. There is a plethora of information addressing incorporation of vegetarianism at different lifecycle stages and different areas including the food industry and cooking at home. There is even a database of vegetarian and vegan restaurants that allows visitors to search specific cities in different states. In regard to accuracy, the VRG website lists contact information in the website footer. The institution published the page and provides an email and phone number. The website domain is .org and is preferable in consideration of website authority. There are many different authors that contribute the documents and information on the website. The website states that registered dietitians and physicians review the nutrition information available through the organization. The footer of the website declares that website information is not medical advice and that visitors should seek answers from qualified medical professionals. Altogether, the authority of the website is strong with information sourced from professional organizations such as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Registered dietitians and physicians write the majority of articles in the journal archives available on the website, which establishes authority.     One summer when taking a trip to a friends country house for a weekend I took on the challenge of being a vegetarian. My friend, an only child, had been raised a vegetarian by parents who were also vegetarians; never once in his life had he eaten meat.     Roughly ten years ago, I was an impressionable fifth grader looking for a belief to stand by when I conveniently happened to stumble upon PETAs website in my elementary school 's computer lab. After watching multiple investigative videos of the gruesome animal slaughters occurring in factory farms, I, much to my parents’ dismay, renounced my title of an omnivore and adopted the vegetarian diet. However, a ten year old girl does not have many vegetarian peers in Catholic school. I consequently turned to vegetarian forums for moral support and conversation concerning this new lifestyle of mine. Over the past decade I have joined and left several online communities, but recently, I have started partaking in a local group called Vegan Detroit. Vegan Detroit is a steadily growing community that consists of four hundred and eighty seven vegetarians from Detroit and its surrounding suburbs. These members share ideas and discuss a multitude of topics related to vegetarianism at monthly meetings and through an online message board. According to, American linguist, John Swales, Vegan Detroit fulfills the six characteristics of a discourse community. A discourse community is a collection of individuals that share one or multiple common, public goals. Specialized texts, methods of communication, rules, and language develop around this mutual goal.
