VARK Analysis: Determining Preferred Learning Styles
VARK Analysis

Every student has their own unique style of learning, with today’s technology; students can easily go on the internet to identify their preferred learning style if desired. By doing so, this would assist the learner to identify their preferred method of learning which can assist the leaner to become more successful in their learning process. As an assignment, the participant answered two different questionnaires the “VARK” (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) (Fleming, n.d) and LDPride.net Learning Styles Report (LDPride, n.d). Summary of Learning Style The VARK Questionnaire consists of 16 answers where the participant answered as many boxes the participant felt appropriate. Once the questionnaire was completed, the participant received the VARK Personal Learning Profile analysis. Upon thoroughly reviewing both profile analysis, the participant concluded that the LDPride questionnaire results were very similar to the VARK Personal Learning Profile Analysis, both scores revealed that the participants’ learning preferences were visual, read/write, tactile/kinesthetic. Between the two profile analyses, the participant favored VARK which was much more in depth providing detailed scenarios and examples that the participant can clearly relate to. The VARK analysis is divided into two categories; Type One consists of learners who scores are between twelve and twenty five; these types are learners are considered to be “contextual” or “situational” (Fleming, n.d) who utilizes one of the four modes individually and changes according to the mode needed. An example would be if a learner was learning a physical skill such as sports, the learner would use the Kinesthetic mode. Type Two learners are “multimodal” who scores greater than thirty; these types of learners are able to use a combination of learning modes at one time, which also reinforces what the learner is learning. An example of a multimodal learner would be using a flip

The VARK Learning style assessment was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987 as a way to improve the development of teachers and to help students become better learners. The VARK inventory categorizes four different sensory modalities with an extra category for multimodal students (Marcy, 2001). The acronym VARK stands for visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic learning modalities. Visual learners are students who learn by seeing information displayed using graphs, pictures, or diagrams. Aural learners prefer to hear the information, and process it best by listening to lectures or having information read aloud. Learners that fall into the read/write category thrive on seeing written words, and do best when they take meticulous notes and read them over and over. And lastly, kinesthetic learners do best when the student is partaking in physical activity. These learners need to move around and work manually with ideas and thrive with hands on activities. The additional multimodal category consists of students who fall into more than one sensory modality of any combination (Nelson, 2013). The VARK inventory is one such tool that is easy to use and can give students information on how to maximize their learning. After completing the VARK questionnaire, my learning style was determined to be multimodal with preferred modalities in visual and kinesthetic.…

Once an individual completes the questionnaire, either online or via paper format, his learning preferences will be identified as visual, aural, read/write, kinesthetic or multimodal. A visual learner prefers using visual resources such as diagrams, pictures, movies and videos. This learner likes to learn by seeing things in action. The aural or auditory learner learns best with lectures, discussions and music and enjoys talking about situations or hearing stories from others in regards to the topic at hand. Someone who has a read / write learning preference will benefit most from textbooks and journals and is a student who takes lots of notes and makes lists to assist with his learning. A kinesthetic learner prefers hands-on type learning via activities or experiments in a real life setting. The multimodal learner is someone who has multiple learning preferences and varies which ones he uses based on the learning that needs to take place. It is important to take note that the individual’s learning preference that is identified does not necessarily represent his strengths; it is simply a representation of his learning preferences.…

In order for students to maximize their learning experience is important to be aware of their preferred learning style. A great tool that is used to determine the learning style preferences is the VARK (, audio, reading / writing, visual kinesthetic) questionnaire. Assessing VARK learning style was developed by Neil Fleming in 1987. The questionnaire consists of 16 questions with multiple response options. Respondents are allowed to skip a question or multiple choice response options if necessary (Barman, Jaafar, and Rahim, 2009). Those who took the survey questions are easy to relate to, because they are based on real life situations (Rogers, 2009). Once the completed questionnaire a score is provided along with the corresponding preference learning and learning strategies identified. It is necessary that students are aware of their learning style preference and knowing the best way to study to reach their full learning potential. This article will discuss the results of the questionnaire Vark author of this work.…

The VARK analysis quiz is to evaluate learning styles. VARK stands for Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic. When taking the quiz, the scores indicated that there was a multi-modal preference for learning. Multi-modal indicates “multiple preferences which gives the learner anywhere from 2-4 modes for learning and communication with others” (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Questionnaire, 2013). It gives the learner an arsenal of tools to use to communicate, teach, and learn vs. one preferred method. A majority of learners are distinguished to be multi-modal (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013). Within the multi-modal world, there are different theories or “approaches” to describe the multi-modal learner. One is the context specific approach. The learner “looks at the info that is to be learned and chooses the mode that is best for the situation (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013). Another way to look at multi-modal learning is the whole sense approach. This mode “uses the various modes in combination to make decisions, learn, and present materials to others. The learner feels unsure about using only one way to learn a new subject, and will use other modes to review learning”(VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013).” This method of using multiple ways to “reinforce learning is the only way a multimodal learner feels they truly understand new material” (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles Multimodality, 2013). Sequencing is another approach to understand multi-modal learning. Learners “switch modes depending on how in-depth of learning they wish to achieve, whether it be comprehensive, simplistic, or moderate. This theory suggests that there is a primary learning style, and the learner switches to other modes depending on how well they wish to learn the material (VARK: A Guide to Learning Styles…

VAK stands for Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic learning styles. VAK helps to provide a simpler way to help someone to understand their own learning styles. Everyone has different ways that they like to learn in and how effective that learning style is for them. Some people may have a more than one type of learning style. For example, during a previous lesson we took a questionnaire independently to find out what was the best learning style was for us and my results showed that I am a visual learner and I believe this to be true as I like to look at examples and watch video clips to help me to complete a task however I believe that I am a kinaesthetic learner as well as I like to be hands on with certain tasks.…

VARK (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, Kinesthetic) analysis of learning styles was developed by Neil D. Fleming in 1987 in an effort to assist learners to assess their own style of learning (http://www.vark-learn.com/english/index.asp). Fleming’s contention is that education will be more effective if the learner understands how they learn best and seeks education programs that cater to their preferred learning style (Fleming & Mills, 1992). Awareness of the different learning styles can also help people in understanding each other and engaging in more constructive…

My learning style is noted to be multimodal. This style stipulates that an individual has multiple ways of learning, instead of one or two ways as other learners. Some persons maybe a Visual learner meaning that they learn by looking at pictures or diagrams. Others may be Aural, by listening they learn best. There is also a learning style that best suits some individuals called the Read/Write where individuals learn by taking notes and reading in order to memorizing. Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic are key elements of individual learning styles. Learning styles is a term used to refer to the methods of gathering, processing, interpreting, organizing, and thinking about information. How people best learn and communicate can be measured by using a simple questionnaire called VARK that assesses the Visual, Aural, Read/Write and Kinesthetic learning and communication styles of individuals. VARK in itself is not a learning style but a measurement tool that focuses on ways that people best receive information and the way people best deliver their communication. By understanding a preferred learning style an individual can use their own strengths to better process information, and coordinate their learning and communication.…
