Validity Assessment
The questions created for the survey instrument needed to represent the overall purpose of the study. To ensure that this was achieved, the survey needed to demonstrate validity and reliability. Validity, as described by Heale and Twycross (2015, 66), examines whether the specific concept has been accurately measured. In contrast, according to Floss (2013,1), reliability refers to the consistency of the instrument to measure the concept. The instrument needed to feature external validity in order for the data collected to be generalised (Heale and Twycross 2015, 66). To ensure the instrument was reliable, the questions featured limited answers to guarantee consistency in the replies and have the potential to be statistically analysed (Heale …show more content…
The questions focused on particular variables relating to crime, such as demographic factors, as it can influence how a community member gets information. For example, the questions focused on how often and where they got their information, as well as what they were interested in. As a result, the questions featured diverse variables, which are important when analysing data.

The survey instrument featured three levels of measurement for the variables, which include nominal, ordinal, and interval. The level of measurements incorporated in the survey was selected due to their specific purposes. Nominal data develops a simple frequency to categorise the genders of the respondents, an important factor when analysing the data (Gray 2009, 451). Ordinal data was collected through the Likert scale, allowing the attitudes towards crime media to be noted, while interval data was used to ensure the frequency of the opinions was measured (Gray 2009, 452).

The first step is to identify themes, which are reoccurring topics mentioned throughout the data (VanderStoep and Johnson 2008, 192). Potential themes for the interview data will include the influence of social media, characteristics of reliable sources, and how respondents ensure the source is reliable. Once the themes are identified, a coding technique will be implemented to analyse the data. For this study, coding will feature open and axial coding.
