Vacation Bible School
It was an ordinary hot summer Texas day in June. I couldn’t sleep all night. Ironically, this wasn’t a typical day because I tumbled out of bed earlier than everyone in my house. I was extremely ecstatic about attending vacation Bible school. I knew that my classmates were all still asleep and enjoying their summer break, but I didn’t envy them; I was excited to start my day and attend vacation Bible school with all the other youth from my church. It was life altering, spending the next three weeks of my summer vacation waking up at the crack of dawn and ending my days just as if I was on my normal school schedule. It was as if nothing made me happier than that. Although it wasn't clear to me then, reminiscing about my vacation Bible school experiences that led me to this point in life, began with my youth Pastor.
Janeth Jackson was my youth Pastor’s name. I showed up to vacation Bible school elated. All of the directors of the program announced that during our time there, among other activities we would be assigned screen parts of a play to present to our parents at the

Given the opportunity to receive a scholarship it will not only help minimize a great deal of the financial hardship that I am currently enduring as a student, but also will assist me in obtaining excellent proficiency in a church setting and the market place. Furthermore, this education will assist me in growing fundamentally as a gospel artist by obtaining the tools and a further understanding of God’s word through my studies at Beulah Heights University. I will be able to excel my inherent talents for speaking and ministering, all while gaining new skills as well. I sincerely appreciate the Committee’s time and efforts in advance by allowing me the opportunity to be the best that I can be and perhaps be able to pass the knowledge and skills gained to others in the future

Unfortunately, education is expensive, and my parents have laid the responsibility of paying for college on my own shoulders. It was not like they said it would be. Taking a cold shower from a pipe coming out of the basement wall of a seventy-five-year-old school was not fun. They said this would be the best week of my summer. Until I began writing this essay, I had never thought about the impact my experiences on Appalachian Service Project mission trips had contributed to my transition from childhood to adulthood. However, now I realize that not only was I affecting other people’s lives, but the work I was doing was also changing me. That was the best week of my summer, and so have the two following trips been that I have taken.…

There is absolutely nothing better than spending a week on vacation with your friends. Last summer, I went to the Free Lutheran Youth (FLY) convention. FLY is a large get-together where Lutheran teenagers from around the country meet and worship. Abby Ator, Lance Bengochea, Sierra Machart, Mariah Machart, Emma Pederson, Bryan Pederson and I go to Bethel Lutheran Church; we decided to fundraise and attend the FLY convention. This year was the first time I have participated; the experience literally changed my outlook on life. The week I spent in Estes Park, Colorado, brought me closer to ten people who I never imagined would become my close friends.…

Cuddled up around the heat of the fire, we chuckled while sharing stories about unruly campers. As we chatted over s’mores and hot cocoa, I recounted my experiences. Looking back upon my periods of apprehension, I realized that my worries were small. Through the madness, I found that the community I was immersed in taught me more about myself than I could have ever imagined. I learned that through my own resilience I can conquer any task, handling struggles with grace and resolve. I realized that I was my best self when I was surrounded with supportive people. I came home from HoneyRock with a Chaco tan and lots of bug bites, but more importantly with memorable adventures and valuable lessons. Glancing around the circle of firelit faces, I was assured that this had indeed been the summer of a…

I can blame no one but myself for my need to attend summer school for this year. However: I would like to blame it on my Spanish teacher, my mother, my siblings, my dog ate the homework, anyone but Christopher L. Martin. Summer school was not in my game plan the first day of school last year. I entered my school, Lake Catholic HS, with the calm surety and purpose of a bona-fide tenth grader, I’ve been here before. My anxiety level was low but my expectations for the future year were high. There are times when I think that I remain overwhelmed in some way by the enormity of the campus; the numerous classrooms, by the tough rules that are actually enforced. Transitioning from a small Catholic parish school boasting an 8th grade graduating class of 34 students to a large campus of hundreds of students present a challenge to “fit-in” that I had never experienced.…

I woke up at 5:00a.m. and I grabbed my Dry bag and headed to First Christian Church. We left after loading all the troop gear and personal gear into the bus, at seven o’clock. We started driving; we had a seven hour drive ahead of us. We drove there in a small bus that seated nine, not including the driver seat and the passenger. Two…

It was in the muggy day in the middle of July and I was stuck outside watching a bunch of bratty kids run around in the woods playing tag and hide and seek. A few months earlier, I was applying for the Camp Counselor job at the M.E Lyons YMCA, which would be my first job. In the beginning of the summer, I had no idea that being a counselor would be extremely challenging, but very rewarding in the end.…

God’s word always needs to be shared with everyone but more especially to the youth. God has always been a huge part of my everyday life. Finding a place where I would be able to share this joy was a priority I had. Camp Skyline was undeniably the place for that. Each night we would sit around a campfire just to hear the songs of the praises to God’s word. Voices as sweet and soft as honey would travel through the mountain air as if a bee on a summer day. Beneath that sound would be the faint crackling of the fire that blazed before us and faintly gave light to each face. On Sundays we had “Skyline Church.” Everyone was to wear pure white on this day. Upon entering church I would see girls of all ages running around in white dresses that were catered to fit each of the hundreds of girls. During those next few hours praises would be lifted and hearts would be led to God as if a lost child in…

On the second day of school during my sophomore year, I realized how much Wahlert meant to me. It had become my home, the place where I felt like I belonged; school almost even seemed like a break from summer. Over the summer, I had become an empty shell and spent my time at the computer wasting the time away; the only interactions I had were with my family, and on rare occasion with my best friends, when we had sleepovers. To see the people I had missed over the summer was great. All of these things felt so true in that moment.…

These same kids who bullied me in middle school were acting like my good friends cheering me on whether it was my failing effort in Gotcha or chanting “chug, chug, chug” as I ruined my small stomach. Just hours ago, I had slowly crept on the bus, book in hand, to be dissected by the eyes of 50 upperclassmen, swiftly dismissed as I scampered to a seat in the very front, feeling very alone. I hoped and prayed that no one would ask for my name. All the memories of my lisp and stuttering making my name sound like a foreign language rushed to my mind. I had never been to Younglife club before, and it was uncommon for someone to just show up for the weekend camp. I had heard that the people who went to Younglife were heathens, and by the continious yelling I heard from the back of the bus as I tried to finish my book, I believed all the rumors. My mom had thrust her little Christian boy into the lions den or more appropriate the Dawgs Den, half of these students were in the obnoxious student section at our school “The Dawg Pound”. The goal of the weekend was just to survive, my mind was already made up that I was going to plead to my mom for us to move out of Morgan County. I hated my high school and knew that there was no way I would have a pleasant four years there.…
