Using the Autocratic Leadership Style Wisely
Using the autocratic leadership style wisely

The autocratic leadership style is often identified as overly demanding with essentially a one way street of communication. The leader is seen as a dictator and is normally focused on the accomplishment of goals through force, manipulation and even threats. Decision making is not shared and the mentality utilized is “do it or else”. However, the autocratic leadership style can be effective in the right situation. In fact, virtually all leaders will have to utilize this style at some time during their career.
This is a style of leadership that can be effective if used in the appropriate time and place. Emergency situations in the workplace that call for urgent action often require autocratic leadership. For example, if a manufacturing company receives a large order from an important customer that needs special attention in order to get filled with a quick turn-around, autocratic leadership is the answer.
An autocratic leadership style will allow for a focused and directed, short term goal oriented workplace. The employees are likely to allow for this style of leadership in the situation because of the short turn-around time. Communication will generally go one way – from boss to employees – during this time period. The autocratic style of leadership can become stressful to employees if utilized for long periods of time.
Utilized in the right time and place, the autocratic leadership style does have a place in every leader’s tool box. However, it is unlikely any leader will be effective utilizing this style as their predominant leadership style.
There are examples of leaders such as Joseph Stalin who are known for this style of leadership. They were put into a situation that called for or allowed for a decisive, dictatorial type of decision making leader and the autocratic style of leadership proved to be effective.
The autocratic leadership style is not a favored style in modern business today. It fails to

This article is really enlightening on the way autocratic managers affect their subordinates. Each leadership style (Authoritarian, Democratic, and Laissez- Faire) has a purpose and depends on the environment for which it is used. I preferably would want to lead an organization in a democratic setting because we live in a democratic environment; therefore our mentalities as individuals are to naturally have an opinion on how we function in our society. Based on its history, this leadership style is most effective because it values team members input, and receiving feedback will always empower them to be a part of something special. Also, this gives them a sense of responsibility and will motivate them to put their energy and effort towards making the organization better; which will make them more accountable.…

The level to which a leader wishes or needs to maintain control may well influence a leader’s style. A leader may prefer to micromanage as it suits their style however, if that style does not suit the situation, it may negatively impact the team and their motivation. However, it may be that the situation requires the leader to maintain a high level of control, for example in a crisis situation where the stakes are high and decisions need to be made rapidly. In general, collective and more collaborative decision making takes longer than autocratic decision making.…

    Autocratic Leadership

A manager with an autocratic style of leadership typically does all the decision-making without getting input from his/her subordinates (Rao, 2010, para. 3). Therefore, the manager is the authoritarian while all the subordinates are to simply follow instructions without giving their own thoughts or concerns about the task given to them. A benefit of this style is it can help provide structure and discipline to an otherwise inexperienced team, and also help a team stay on top of strict deadlines. Since the manager makes all the decisions, there is no time “wasted” on decision-making if there’s a time constraint. This type of leadership is also helpful when the manager has the highest amount of knowledge and could therefore specifically guide the subordinates on how to complete a task (Cherry), or when a type of…

There are many different types of leadership styles from traditional, contemporary and emerging theories. As stated in Nelson and Quick (2013), “Leadership in organizations is the process of guiding and directing the behavior of people in the work environment.” (p.193) In keeping with the traditions of the past, traditional leadership is defined as a style where power is given to the leader. The traditional styles of leadership are autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. An autocratic leader is considered to be an authoritarian. They possess the power to dictate their willon employees and will not hesitate to do so if needed. A manager that uses this leadership styledoes not consult or allow their employees to give any input in decision-making process.Employees that are not self-motivated, who need structure, and need direction and motivation will thrive under this leadership style. The democratic leadership style is much…

First, authoritarian leaders are best described as those who dictate orders to the employees and provide clear expectations for what needs to be achieved, when it should be completed, and how. The decisions are quick because there is no consultation or independent input from the rest of the team and typically they make choices based on their own ideas and judgments and rarely accept advice. There is also a clear division between the leader and the followers and will dictate working methods and processes to their team. The problems of relying too much on an autocratic style is that it can lead to poor quality decisions because of the lack of input. Team morale can be low with leaders being viewed as bossy when they are unable to contribute ideas. This can result in high staff turnover as they will be unlikely to be felt as valued employees. However, this does not mean there is no place for an autocratic approach. This style of management is often used in an emergency or when speed…

This can be appropriate when you need to make decisions quickly, when there's no need for team input, and when team agreement isn't necessary for a successful outcome. “Leadership style is a relatively consistent pattern of behavior reflecting a leader’s beliefs and attitudes. Although no two people act as leaders in precisely the same way, people do lead with three basic styles: (1) authoritarian (or autocratic), (2) democratic, and (3) laissez-faire” (Bebbe & Masterson, 2009, p. 290). Each of these different styles can affect group communication. First, is authoritarian, better known as autocratic. This particular Leadership style is used by people whom want control. They want to make the decisions and give the orders. This can be very detrimental in a group environment. People do not want to be bossed around. They do not want or expect to be told what to do when working in a group environment. They believe they will be able to offer input and to have their input thought about. With an Autocratic leader, this just does not happen. Sometimes you hear of leaders saying, “It’s my way or the highway.” This is very popular in this type of setting. This causes many conflicts within a group, including resentment and lack of creativity or contribution. However, sometimes this style works within groups especially if the leader is the most knowledgeable about a project. Next Democratic leadership style is the opposite of Autocratic. Within this style, leaders tend to have more confidence in their people. They want to hear their opinions and take their ideas to heart. Unfortunately, even though this is considered to be the best style to have; it can have some negative implications. For example, in a project where time is critical, using this type of leadership can slow things down because there are to many people expressing ideas and wanting to do things their own way. It…
