Using Technology In Law Enforcement

I really enjoyed this week's class because it was more hands on. In a classroom setting, it is sometimes hard to picture the different scenarios being lectured. Being ‘on the scene’ in the parking lot helped me see a clearer picture. Going through the motions of low-risk stops helped me, grasp the full concept of the risk that police officers go through every day. I was clueless about the details to officers actions pertaining to different stops. There were multiple technicalities; concerning low-risk stops parking slightly off and to the side of the suspects car and positioning wheels to oncoming traffic. Through technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), which are devices that can attach to anything. This device can track and identify items aiding in inventory, monitoring, surveillance and security of personal items. These devices can act as law enforcements ‘eyes and ears’ surveying the environment and people. Overall, I think that these technologies will be inherently useful for the law enforcement. Identifying criminals will become straightforward, which will ultimately protect the civil liberties of all people. In addition, it is important to note that the application of these technologies is most vital. How the law enforcement uses the technology is crucial, if it acts as beneficial to society. There should be more educational programs instilling skill, knowledge, and integrity of people who will use the technology. Ultimately, sharing, collecting, and processing information is advantageous. The final obstacle is how we manage the data. There is mass information circulating but being able to distinguish the needed information from all the available information is key in the efficiency of networking. In a more connected world, we are more guarded against crimes which fundamentally, brings us together - communities and information. Humans have limited resources attention so our attention serves to act as a bottleneck. Attention focuses on certain important events where are able to separate the unnecessary information from the vital data. Pertaining to the line of work that officers are in, they use tunnel vision to their advantage. When officers face high-risk situations, they are focused on the subject and their motives. Officers do not care about what is happening in their environment such as the weather. In a trial, when officers are told to recall the event, evidently they cannot recall all the information because of their inattentional blindness. Our attention and memory are valuable but we cannot store endless information about our surrounding. Therefore, this is when technology comes into play, acting as our ‘eyes and ears’.
