Research and studies have been conducted to further understand the texting-literacy relationship. Parents and teachers often blame texting for the corruption of language and degradation in spelling. Teachers are complaining about textisms they are finding in students’ schoolwork. They wonder if texting can have any positive influence on learners’ language development. Many studies have found that teens through their texting, blogging, and emailing are reading and writing more than any other generation. Most research seems to focus on the relationship between textism use and phonological awareness, the use of textism and children’s spelling, and sending…

As stated in the article, “2b or Not 2b” by David Crystal, some people believe that texting is not a natural form of communication and that it is wrecking our language. Although some people may agree with this idea, studies have challenged this opinion. Rather than fearing the consequences of texting, people should embrace this evolution and understand that this new form of communication may actually have benefits on literacy. This author once stated, “there is no evidence that texting teaches people to spell badly: rather, research shows that those kids who text frequently are more likely to be the most literate and the best spellers, because you have to know how to manipulate language.” The moral panic created by this form of socialization should be diminished, as people have the power and ability to shape our future.…

In chapter fifteen ''2b or Not 2b?'' of ''They Say / I Say'', David Crystal provides arguments in favour of text messaging. Crystal tries to prove his point that text messaging is not destroying the English language with great research, a lot of examples and a clear organization. As the author himself puts it, ''Texting has added a new dimension to language use, but it's long-term impact is negligible. It's not a disaster. ''. Although some people believe text messaging is pillaging our punctuation, savaging our sentences and raping our vocabulary, Crystal insist that. In sum, then, his view is that the abbreviations were used as a natural, intuitive response to a technological problem, but that they are also more than just time and energy saving act. He considers some texts also as linguistically quite complex.…

Over the past ten to fifteen years, there has been a major change in the way people communicate to each other due to the development of the internet. Because of this, there has been a massive effect on the amount of socialising between friends and family; using technology in online social messaging websites such as Bebo, MSN, Facebook and many more. Through these social messaging websites, more and more people can interact with their friends and family all over the world. An expert professor David Crystal has supported the idea of web-based messages and disagrees with the view that slang and contractions leads to a lower English standard of language. Although this is a benefit to most people, it has been abused by some people by overusing it and different ‘language’ while typing, which cause differentiation in the way we speak and the way we write. The current views are pointing at the fact that this is causing a pejoration in this generation’s language which could badly affect their and our future; destroying the conventions of Standard English. Some people argue that texting or other web based interactions can be creative forms of language use. Others believe that people only use these forms of communication due to laziness, or just lack of knowledge of the English language. In my opinion; texting is a mixture of both. Common ‘text language’ includes abbreviating many different words, which in my opinion requires a certain level of intellect and knowledge of the English language to be able to do in the first place. However, I also understand that this language is becoming so common and accepted to an extent that people are learning the abbreviations as a substitute of learning the full English terms.…

For instance text messaging has made people have a certain and crazy way of spelling that most well a lot of professors, teachers and more don't always understand. Kids and certain adults communicate in many different modalities as a result of technology. When using iPhones, tablets, smart pads and more they use T9 word which corrects the spelling as you text or swipe and let you circle some of the words and it spells them for you. When I started high school and got my first phone I used it, it’s a technology built to help people typing on cellphones. I didn’t know how to spell words so it used set of words that where similar to the word I was looking for. Texting became even easier to me when I was a minor. Some people are happy but 10% complain as Trubek stated “Damn you, autocorrect” (220).…

In an article titled “Texting Slang Aiding Chilren’s Language Skill” by Alexander Smith, researchers found that text messaging may actually be improving and not damaging young children’s spelling skills. Children were quizzed on their use of mobile phones and were asked to translate messages between standard English and text language, as well as complete tasks to reveal their English writing, reading and spelling abliities. Suprisingly, the children who were better at spelling and writing were those of which were texters. On the downside, English examiners have complained about the use of slang expressions in GCSEs. Markers for the exams found that almost unforgivable basic errors were made by apparently bright pupils.…

“They are destroying it: pillaging our punctuation; savaging our sentences; raping our vocabulary. And they must be stopped.” This quote from John Humphrys' essay “I H8 Txt Msgs: How Texting Is Wrecking Our Language” clearly shows where he stands on the subject of how “texters” are ruining our English language by abbreviating a lot of our words. How people, more specifically the young ones are being lazy with how they text these days because they believe it really saves them a sufficient amount of time. They have transformed so many of our English words. Humphrys published “I H8 Txt Msgs: How Texting Is Wrecking Our Language” on September 23, 2007. John Humphrys is the also the star of the TV show…
