Abstract
A majority of students are able to do basic mathematical operations. However, they have not acquired the ability and the necessary skills required to solve mathematical word problem. Solving mathematical word problem requires deep understanding and acquisition of mathematical basic skills for complex strategies. One of the widely used strategies is visualization. The method used in this research is graphical representation.
This paper was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using visualization which is graphical representation in solving mathematical word problem involving addition and subtraction for 4 Amal pupils. The techniques used for data collection were pre test, post test, questionnaire, observation and clinical interview. The data obtained was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively

Majority of students lack understanding of mathematical language and show weakness in basic numerical computation. The students make frequent errors because they misread operation signs when adding or subtracting integers or carry numbers incorrectly when multiplying whole number and decimals. Furthermore, these students have difficulty understanding written or verbal directions or explanations, and find word problems especially difficult to translate.…

The material used in this learning segment is a research-based strategy adopted to teach Alejandra steps to solving word problems involving critical problem-solving skills that promote conceptual thinking and understanding by using Schema-Based Instructions (SBI). Her IEP goal states Alejandra to be able to solve real world math problems in addition and subtraction and it aligns with the state standard 5.1.1.4: Solve real world and mathematical problems requiring addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of multi-digit whole numbers. Alejandra already has knowledge of adding and subtracting single and double-digit numbers without regrouping as mentioned in her IEP. The learning goals, objectives, materials, learning task, planned…

Graphs and diagrams are also helpful when it comes to comparing data. When it is written out in words it can be confusing whereas a chart both can accurately compare and measure over a certain period of time. Visual learners process information the best through graphical tools which allows them to interpret data in a logical manner. Students with this learning style should formulate their notes in an orderly fashion, so that they would be able to visualize how the pieces of the puzzle are connected.…

Traditionally students are taught that they need to look for key words when solving problems but this can often be confusing. Certain words like “times” could mean division or multiplication. In the example given many students got mixed up with the word and solved it like a multiplication problem resulting in an incorrect answer. When using bars of various lengths and words like “fewer” students solved more problems correct. Bar modeling also emphasizes the relationship among operations. In the picture examples shown, you can see…

While developing student’s problem solving skills, professional math teachers must begin to teach students to understand the meanings of whole numbers. This step will serve as scaffolding for students as they encounter more advanced concepts. Teachers should encourage the use of manipulatives, such as base-ten blocks, as they will help students relate whole numbers to something real. Teachers can also use Venn diagrams as they allow students to graphically organize material, which aids in the development of their analytical skills and teaches them to draw conclusions based on specific criteria.…

Mathematics for common education have been a process of memorizing away from the child's natural development, apart from understanding, reasoning and interest. The problem then lies not in the major or minor child's ability to understand or the age at which to learn mathematics. These are just prejudices of adults; rather the problem lies in the way in which we teach them.…
