The use of children as props in August Strindberg’s “The Father” and Euripides’s “Medea”

The relationship between a parent and a child is usually described as one of unconditional love. In the plays mentioned above, parents manipulate their influence over their children in order to satisfy their ulterior motive and disregard the role of the child as anything more than a prop to be used to gratify their own purpose. This essay displays instances and discusses where and how the characters of the play make use of the children in their respective plays.
The titles of each of the play also allow a reader to gauge just how useful the role of the child or the relevance of the child to the plot would be. In “The Father”, the title itself is rather descriptive of the relevance of the child, as the saying goes, the child gives birth to the parent. In “Medea” the play is centred on Medea alone, and the involvement of the children is virtually non-existent up until Medea talks them into taking the poisoned clothes with them. When comparing the two, obvious differences are bound to arise and this would be the first instance. In “The Father”, Bertha, the child is whom the plot is centred on. The constant self doubt and paranoia which the Captain faces due to the fact that Laura says that perhaps the child isn’t his own is what finally drives him to madness. The constant questioning of the loyalty of his wife and whatever claim he has over his daughter is brought under scrutiny and the pressure is too much. “Medea” on the other hand focuses on the Medea, and her quest for revenge as she also faces the moral crisis of letting her children die. The children, throughout the play are spoken about but if actual stage presence would be counted

They both knew that their parents would forbid their love for each other.     Through ‘The Tragedy of King Lear’, Shakespeare represents a distinctive voice in which influences the way we perceive the role of power play in our world as it broadens our understanding of the universality and complexity of power play. Compared with the 21st century film ‘Brassed Off’, we are presented with an insight into the various means of attaining power and its ability to uncover the true nature of people within their struggle for supremacy and control. Shakespeare presents 'The Tragedy of King Lear' as the struggle for power and the political and filial machinations that the desire for power can create. Shakespeare focuses the distinctive voice around the central character King Lear who represents a conceited oppressor whose fall from power prompts the downfall of the Kingdom that he once controlled. The main cause of his demise is his failure to understand and possess a clear vision of the people around him. In Lear's eyes, he sees his eldest daughter Goneril’s facade to be a loyal and true expression, 'Sir I love you more than word can wield the matter/Dearer than eyesight, space and liberty', although Lear's inability to see the truth results in his manipulation and the banishing of his loyal acquaintances; his youngest daughter Cordelia and his dear friend Kent. Although Lear can physically see, it is the understanding, awareness and direction that he lacks and is blind to. In contrast to Lear being physically capable of seeing, Gloucester becomes physically blind but gains the form of vision that Lear lacks, and consequently Gloucester evades a corollary comparable to Lear's. Here Shakespeare presents his distinctive voice on power play through the depiction of the manipulation and motivation behind the characters struggle for sovereignty.     Like Shakespeare’s other comedies, The Merchant of Venice seems to endorse the behavior of characters who treat filial piety lightly, even though the heroine, Portia, sets the opposite example by obeying her father’s will. Launcelot greets his blind, long lost father by giving the old man confusing directions and telling the old man that his beloved son Launcelot is dead. This moment of impertinence can be excused as essential to the comedy of the play, but it sets the stage for Jessica’s far more complex hatred of her father. Jessica can list no specific complaints when she explains her desire to leave Shylock’s house, and in the one scene in which she appears with Shylock, he fusses over her in a way that some might see as tender. Jessica’s desire to leave is made clearer when the other characters note how separate she has become from her father, but her behavior after departing seems questionable at best. Most notably, she trades her father’s ring, given to him by her dead mother, for a monkey.
