Urn Of Fate
The country of Italy calls St. Nicholas Babbo Natale,
(bàb-bo na-TA-ley) or Old Man Christmas. He is dressed in his traditional bishop’s miter and cloak, and travels with a donkey.
Italy holds a special place for St. Nicholas, particularly the Basilica San Nicolas in Bari, Italy. After the Church of St. Nicholas in Myra, the Basilica has become a church where many people make a special pilgrimage to honor this very special saint. During the Christmas season, small presents are drawn from a container known as the "Urn of Fate”. The "Urn of Fate" is part of the Christmas celebrations in many Italian households. It is brought out on Christmas Eve, and holds a wrapped present for everyone.

Winston Churchill once said, “Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” As the big day draws near, it is important to reflect on the roots of the global holiday as well as the direction in which it is heading. Christmas is a tradition rooted deep in the history of western society. It has undergone many changes since it’s earliest celebrations. Even today, the holiday is constantly changing. Each year brings new innovations to Christmas. In the dawn of the holiday, it was minor and focused on the birth of Jesus, the light of the world. In the 19th century, Christmas was a time of family and goodwill to mankind. Today, though there still remains aspects of religion and selflessness, more than ever it has become a holiday consumed by commercialism. It is a development that is not likely to go way any time soon.…

My mission is named after St. Agnes who was put into a fire, and then beheaded when she was 12 years old. When Agnes refused to offer incense to the pagan idols, the Chumash Indians put Agnes into a fire but she remained untouched by the flames. Since the flames did not kill her, she was then beheaded. On her feast day on the 21st of January, two lambs are blessed and their wool is used to make the palliums (which are bands of white wool which the pope gives to the archbishops as symbol of their authority over the new archbishop) of the year. A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, is a book that reminds all Christians of what inspires the holiday of Christmas and the good will that surrounds it. During the Christmas season, people tend to put their daily needs, selfishness, and working mindset aside for benevolence, friendship, and jubilation. In Dickens' novel, Scrooge, the main character, is surrounded by a handful of characters that stand out as representatives of the good will that surrounds Christmas. Fred represents good humor, cheer, and celebration, while Fezziwig is a kind hearted, generous and spirited employer and friend. Tiny Tim is also courageous and boisterous in his battle with his malady, and the Crachit family, despite their lack of wealth, still believed that God had and would continue to provide them with whatever they needed. However, Scrooge ignores his fellowmen and becomes a very selfish and hateful man. He eventually learns the lessons of Christmas spirit and good will through the visitations of the spirits of Christmases past, present, and future. The spirit of Christmas past taught him that covetousness will chase the ones that love you away and replace God as an idol. The spirit of Christmas present taught him that his greed made others suffer like the Crachit family that barely had enough to eat and could not pay for Tiny Tim's medical care. The spirit of Christmas future taught him that if he were to continue his miserly ways he would die a very lonely man with only his greed to remember him by. With each visit, Scrooge learns that his selfish and greedy habits and self-centered personality do not contribute in any way to the improvement of his life or the spirit of Christmas. He finally realizes that he must change his ways and discover the true meaning of the holiday of Christmas or lose his soul for all eternity. In A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, the message of the true meaning of Christmas stands out with the lessons learned by Ebeneezer…
