Up Down Rollercoaster
The dictionary explains “roller coaster” as an elevated railway constructed with sharp curves and steep inclines on which cars roll, as in an amusement park; but it also says it is a kind of behaviour, events or experiences characterized by sudden and extreme changes. This is exactly what my transition from secondary school to higher education felt like.
Having to graduate from school was the most terrifying, saddest and sweetest moment of my life. I felt emotions I had never felt before. I did not want to leave; however, I was forced to do so. Just like when you get on a roller coaster: you are horrified, your hands sweat and your heart is about to explode but you are still there, sitting, hoping for the ride to start. And when it does, all of a sudden it is over. Just like secondary school. You want to take another ride even though you had your ups and downs, but you are required to stand in line again. The only difference is that, when you get on the roller coaster again, it is not the same, it has changed and it is college now.
So you are in a whole new roller coaster now and the turns, slides and spins you knew by heart are different. In school I knew everyone and everyone knew me, and somehow this felt comfortable. My transition to college was not easy. It took me a while to cope with the idea of being away from my friends and teachers, and starting a career that would come along with me for the rest of my life. In college you have to be more independent and in some way I got attracted to this freedom. So one way or another, I managed to find my vocation. And so this ride goes on, it accelerates, goes backwards and gets really high.
Both secondary school and college have their ups and downs. I guess I just have to buckle up my seatbelt and enjoy this roller coaster of emotions and survive through the rest of the

I dreaded the alarm that woke me up at 6:30 in the morning. It was as loud as a screaming toddler that could be heard for miles. I groggily got out of bed and got ready for my first day of school. It was a weird feeling not putting on a uniform like I had been for the past nine years, but I also enjoyed that freedom. The nervousness became more and more intense as I could closer and closer to campus. When we arrived, I got out of the car, and watched my dad drive off to go take my younger sister to school. There was no going back now; I had no other choice than to walk through those doors. I felt like my throat was in my stomach. I noticed some familiar faces, and I walked towards them. While I was approaching my friends, a senior, facing toward me, walked passed. He must have been at least six feet tall, which was incredibly intimidating for me at just over five feet. I was not used to the fact that I’d potentially have classes with these giants. Additionally, the array of new teachers, and having to learn all of their teaching styles and things they did or did not tolerate was hard in…

The transition from high school to college presents us all with many new challenges. The workload may feel overwhelming and the surroundings will be unfamiliar. We will have to take on the responsibility of managing life on our own. But the biggest challenge will be learning to embrace the unfamiliar, all the while searching for that small space we can comfortably inhabit. I don’t think our challenge is learning to live as a little fish in a big pond, but rather finding our small pond within the…

Dropping out of school was something I never imagined. At the age of 14, two years before graduation I had to drop out of school. Not because I chose to, not because I didn’t want to go and not because I was a lazy child and didn’t want to learn. I had to drop out of school for family issues. At the time my family was very unstable,…

    Roller Coaster Ride

When I was younger, I used to love going to amusement parks because roller coasters fascinated me. These beastly machines are usually made of steel or wood, can go as fast as 120 miles per hour, and reach the height of 420 feet. It amazes me why average people like me would trade the tranquility of the ground to be high up in the air, being tossed around with such brutality and roughness, like vegetables in a food processor. Even still I enjoyed riding these fast amazing machines, sometimes so fast, that no matter how hard I tried to scream, my cry would not come out, as if it was trapped inside my body. I specifically liked the steel roller coasters with several loops, for they would give me the sensation of being spun around like rotating car wheels. The wooden roller coasters are also very fun because they sway much more than the steel ones, bringing back good childhood memories of when my dad would push me on the swings. What I enjoy the most about these captivating rides, and what makes me want to ride them again, is the thrill and excitement of having survived them. As I became older and gained more responsibilities and duties, going to theme parks became less frequent, but the excitement of riding roller coasters still intrigues and amuses me. Roller coaster rides are thrilling and exhilarating because of their speed, their hills, and their loops. Roller coaster rides are thrilling and exhilarating because of their speed. I used to think these scream rides went much faster than they actually do, but they simply pick up speed very fast, giving the feeling and impression of zooming through the wind. The air will gush at my face, making me believe I'm in the middle of a storm, or hurricane, which makes my hair go all over the place, as if I had recently received a really horrible haircut. The air flowing also gives me the chills, tensing me up inside and making me unable to move, just like the last time I had…

I am currently in my freshman year at college, and I have found the experience a very rewarding and exciting one. This year has been a year of "firsts" in my life. I have experienced my first call home to truly say "hi," my first all-night study session, and my first time on my own and in my own space. Since the first year is a changing experience, I was glad to live with about two hundred other people experiencing the same feelings I was because it made it so much easier to make the transition from our former high school lives to our new college lives together.…

I had a great experience about roller coasters even though I have not climbed one before. Roller coaster is a popular amusement ride developed for amusement parks and modern theme parks. There are two main types of roller coasters which are the steel and wooden roller coaster. Steel coasters have tubular steel tracks, and are known for their smooth ride and often convoluted shapes that frequently turn riders’ upside-down via inversions. Wooden coasters have flat steel tracks, and are typically renowned by enthusiasts for their rougher ride and "air time" produced by negative G-forces when the train reaches the top of hills along the ride. There are also hybrid roller coasters which combine a steel structure with flat tracks or a wooden structure with tubular tracks and a wooden roller coaster is most often classified as a roller coaster with running rails made of flattened steel strips mounted on laminated wooden track. Occasionally, the support structure may be made out of a steel lattice or truss, but the ride remains classified as a wooden roller coaster due to the track design. Because of the limits of wood, wooden roller coasters in general do not have inversions (when the coaster goes upside down), steep drops, or extremely banked turns (overbanked turns). I would prefer to ride on a steel roller coaster because to me steel coaster looks like it is more modernized that a wooden roller coaster although there are many wooden roller coasters that are modernized these days.…

Nearing the end of my senior year is pretty bitter sweet. On one hand I'm very excited to finally be done and able to move on to the next chapter of my life. But on the other, I'm nervous that soon I will be out on my own and having to support myself. High school gives you memories that you will never forget, whether they are good ones or bad. It was hard for me to transition through freshman year with more classes and more classrooms to go to. Also with more older and intimidating students. Though many freshman usually are nervous in their first year of high school, some were already acquainted with the upperclassmen and had in no time made many friends. Though I wasn't looking for friends, I saw how they were all so comfortable being shown around the school and other things of the nature. Besides being nervous of my first year, I also seemed to have taken lightly of my classes and just floated through without trying. I got either one or two F's in different courses throughout my four quarters and I vowed to myself to strive for better within my sophomore year.…
