Pedigree showing Inheritance of Huntington’s disease
? Explain how you made your conclusion using evidence from the pedigree and the principles of genetics. According to the pedigree above this would be a recessive trait. The reason this is a recessive trait is because no family member at the beginning of the pedigree was affected. Also no family members in the third generation of the pedigree were affected as well. If this were a dominant trait I see it affecting more family members in the earlier stages of the pedigree.

2. What would a Punnett square that shows how the son in generation IV (marked with an A) inherited cystic fibrosis look like? | A | a | A | AA | Aa | a | Aa | aa |

Autosomal dominant with reduced penetrance is the most common mode of transmission, although autosomal recessive and X-linked forms rarely occur. Ectrodactyly is caused also by duplication of 10q24. The inheritance of cleft hand is autosomal dominant with a variable penetrance of 70%. Therefore, if the parent has…

Although many believe the taboo that children produced by closely related people are always sickly, or must have a genetic default of some sort, this is just not the case. Perfectly healthy children can be born to an incestuous situation, and in fact, most are perfectly healthy. The problem arises with repetitive inbreeding over hundreds of years, similar to the Egyptian royal line. This constant inbreeding allows normally recessive alleles to be expressed. These atypical recessive genes are for the most part masked by normal, dominant genes in the rest of the population where natural selection is occurring through non-related…

CF is an autosomal recessive gene, meaning that both parents must pass on the mutated gene for it to be present. If one parent passes on a good gene and the other passes a bad one, the person will only be a carrier of the gene and the disease will not show up. If both parents are heterozygous with the CF gene, they have a 1 in 4 chance of having a baby with cystic fibrosis. Approximately 1 in 30 Caucasian Americans is a carrier of a cystic fibrosis mutation. Although CF is less common in these groups, approximately 1 in 46 Hispanics, 1 in 65 African and 1 in 90 Asians carry at least one abnormal CFTR gene. Approximately 30,000 Americans have CF, making it one of the most common life-shortening inherited diseases in the United States.…

Your assignment is to write a short report to this woman. This report should describe what is known about the genetic basis of this trait (OMIM number, inheritance, chromosomal location, gene function, metabolic basis, treatment, etc.). What is the probability that a child of this woman will be affected? What is the probability that one of her children will be a carrier? The answer to this question will be affected by many factors (the population frequency of the allele responsible for this trait, the mode of inheritance, etc.). As the frequencies of many diseases vary across human populations, you are free to choose from which population the woman is a member. Please clearly state her assumed population origin in your report.…

defective alleles, and it is estimated that most people are carriers of three to five such alleles." Most of the illnesses are said to be rare because the individual has to be unlucky enough to have both parents be carriers of the same defective allele, and then to be the one in four (on average) that gets the recessive alleles from both the mother and the father (Broderick & Blewitt, 2006). The disorders that have been traced to recessive gene alleles are; Cystic fibrosis, PKU, Sickle-cell anemia, Tay-Sachs disease, Thalassemia, Hemophilia, and Duchenne's' muscular dystrophy. The last two disorders mentioned are X linked and are expressed primarily or exclusively in males (Table 2.3, p.41). In order to be an good genetic counselor it seems that not only do mom and dad play a large part, but there is also a huge connection to the generations that came before…

The pedigree analysis reveals that the condition affects both sexes, is present in all generations and can only be inherited from an affected mother. These features, allied to the absence of male transmission to the offspring, rule out Y-linked and autosomal inheritances. If it was an X-linked dominant inheritance, an affected male would always have affected daughters, but II.6 has one unaffected daughter (III.6), so it can be ruled out.…
