Unley High School Application Essay
As a young child I have been brought up around the marvels of France, from TV documentaries to tales of crunchy baguettes and delectable cheeses told by my grandparents. Winning a scholarship would not only fulfil a life long dream of mine, but would extend my career interests and develop helpful overseas relationships. After learning Chinese in primary school for eight years, and finding a lack of desire to learn on my behalf - finding out that Unley High School offered the French language as a subject was a major decider for me, as to which High School to attend. As soon as I began to learn French, I knew I was going to love it - the flowing language, pronunciation, descriptive way of speech, as well as the delightful culture, simply appealed to me. Not only was I soon obsessed with my French textbook, but my interest for the culture didn't end there. My mother, Tanya Cobby-Smith, began to single handedly run a successful market stall, The French Tarte. Journalism and language flow immensely well together, as being bilingual means there are more career opportunities, a variety of people to interact with, and traveling also becomes simpler once you have overseas contacts. I would love to continue learning French into year twelve and beyond, and having been advanced to Year 10 French means I'm already earning early SACE points, securing a successful career in my field of choice. However learning in a classroom compared to being in France, are two very different things. In France I would have more opportunities to test my language skills, as well as develop my pronunciation, cultural understanding and how to incorporate different parts of language into everyday speech, as well as being able to develop understanding on their fashion and cultural
