Steps of Communication Model
Personal or Business Scenario

1. Sender has an idea.

Since I live with my mother, I felt it was a good idea that we were able to communicate with each other effectively. I was the sender when I wanted to comment about something that was said to my daughter.
2. Sender encodes the idea in a message.
This will allow me to put my thoughts into words effectively so as not to lose meaning in translation.
3. Sender produces the message in a medium.
Because writing something of this nature seems impersonal, I decided to verbally address this issue with her.
4. Sender transmits message through a channel.
I verbally convey how I felt when I heard something said to my daughter that I didn’t feel was appropriate and asked that we do what we can to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
5. Audience receives the message.
She allowed me the opportunity to express how I felt about the subject.
6. Audience decodes the message.
She decodes the message and she immediately jumps down my throat and tells me that I only have the right to ask that if this had happened once before.
7. Audience responds to the message.
She informed me that I had no right to ask her to make sure it doesn’t happen again because it only happened one time; which implies it was accidental. And that if it were to happen a second time, then and only then, would I have the right to ask her that.
8. Audience provides feedback to the sender.
This, in turn, leads to a long and drawn out discussion; but probably one of the best we have ever had because we were actually able to get to a common ground and actually conveyed things to one another that we had not been able to before.
