Universal Good Manners Do Exist
Someone told me that “The only obligations in life we have to another person is to leave him or her in no worse shape than when we met him or her”. I would say that simple words like “thank you”, “excuse me”, “I am sorry”, etc, are really important to deal with people we have just met. Therefore, having good manners is important to everyone not matter what their origin. Thus, it would not be exaggeration to affirm that all the corruption, social injustice, poverty, and problems of the world could be solved if people accepted they have an obligation to treat other with kindness. On the other hand, we live in a multicultural world and, sometimes, even when we try to be polite, we can offend someone through words or gestures that they recognize as rude in their country, region or city. Accordingly to this perspective, I would like to give answers to two controversial questions: (1) Are there universal good manners? In other words, is there a core of good manners that polite people of all countries recognize? (2) Are good manners different for each individual culture?
I think there are three main characteristics of the human behavior around good manners that we should not ever forget: respect for the cultures around us, diplomacy and hospitality. At first, having respect for the cultures around us means being curious about how the people live, without being judgmental in any circumstance. Thereby, when visiting China do not criticize the Chinese people’s habit of eating insects. Additionally, diplomacy means an acute sensitivity to what is proper and appropriate in dealing with others, including the ability to speak or act without offending. For this reason, we Brazilians have to avoid telling jokes about Portuguese people when visiting Portugal. Finally, hospitality involves showing respect for one's guests, providing for their needs, and treating them as equals. Extreme examples of good hosts are the Eskimos who offer their own wives to heat their visitors at

Oftentimes in society, we take many things for granted. Many things we may not even notice. We take for granted the safety of the normality of our lives. We also take advantage of the care and precision that goes into keeping that way. In our safe society the behaviors we display are expected to be courteous and polite. Society does not expect the people in it to be rude or without manners. Our society is like this because we are always being watched, being regulated. However, a few minutes later an elderly Caucasian woman walking out with her granddaughter acknowledged my greeting. When her grand-daughter did not respond to my hand gesture she exclaimed, “Honey don’t be rude! Where are your manners?” and the grand-daughter finally welcomed my hand gesture. The polite lady started talking to me about customs and traditions, and how people are not as polite as they used to be. She exclaimed that individuals are too focused on other things and forget their manners. Aside from the previous experiences, breaking this social norm ended in positive formal sanctions; as a result of my gesture the lady smiled and complemented my actions. Correspondingly there were a few other individuals who accepted my greetings, while others looked the other way and pretended I was not…

Anywhere we go, there are going to be at least a couple of different norms occurring at the same time. From walking onto a train to sitting in a someone’s home, everyone will behave in distinct manners to which they have grown accustomed. The way we behave is not in the matter of right or wrong, but only what our society allows us to. In our society, we have a number of society norms that we abide by. For example, there is an unwritten rule of how one should behave in an elevator. For example, it is proper to eye-to-eye contact, move away from strangers, and respect your elders.…

For example, in Ireland when greeting someone for the first time a handshake and a hello are needed, as well as maintaining eye contact. When invited to dinner bring a gift for the host of either chocolate, wine, or flowers; and always be on time otherwise the meal will be cold. Plus, remember table manners; no elbows on the table, hands remain visible, fork in the right hand and the knife in the left hand while eating. Comparatively, greetings in Australia are also laid back with a handshake and smile, and Aussies prefer to use first names even if it’s the initial gathering. Many times an invitation for dinner will be for a barbie, BBQ, and it is expected that the guests each bring a dish or alcoholic beverages. Table manners are the same as in Ireland, however, when guests are finished or full place the knife and fork parallel on the plate with the handles facing to the right. In contrast, Japan is very formal and ritualized when it comes to meetings, so show respect by bowing and waiting to be introduced. Arrive to dinner before to scheduled time, never arrive late as that is seen as disrespectful, and bring a gift for the host. Dress as if going to to the office, then when entering the home leave shoes by the door and put on slippers at the doorway. The traditional utensil that will be used are chopsticks, but don’t point the chopsticks at anyone and no piercing food with them. For the most part conversation is subdued since the Japanese take the time to savor food, yet don’t start a conversation, guests are only allowed to speak if another engages them first. Similarly, all three countries treasure table manners, gift giving, and respect towards the host are the main actions needed to be a proper guest. Ireland and Australia seem to be more laid back and informal, while in Japan everything is followed by…

It is stated that “ The culture standards that define normal behavior for any society are determined by society itself” (Haviland W. A., Prins E. L. , McBride B. , & Walrath D., 2011). Each culture from around the world has their own practices, teachings, view, and ideals that are passed down to them from religion, view on sexuality, to the way of living. All this accounts for how the norm is perceived and thought from culture to culture what we see as normal other’s might seem as impolite, legal, or strange in other cultures. An example of this is noted In the online article 11 American Behaviours That Considered Are Rude Around The World (D'Arpine A., 2015) where it states that Americans consider being a time to an event a polite costume…
