What is strategic management and why is it critical to the success of an organization in meeting its goals and mission?
Background
In January 2007, Apple Computer a global company changed its name to Apple Inc. and it has been on a strategic path from being a vendor of Macintosh PC to creating innovative twenty-first-century products. With the technology that many companies can’t complete like iPod, iPhone and the iPad to name a few. Although there have been ups and down time during Apple’s history, little change of the company’s strategic profile are still the same (Sind & Office, 2008). Two college dropouts, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple in 1976. Steve Jobs, operating CEO is the creative mind behind Apple’s technology and imaginative aspects of the organization. During the troubled years (1985-1996), Steve Jobs was not involved in the company. Upon Jobs return, Apple introduces the first legal music site, “iTunes store that customers could buy music on the spot. In addition, Apple opened many retail stores across the country and globally. Competitively, Apple has surprise the competition by out selling its products at a higher price. Ultimately, the question is will Apple’s technologies continue to compete with Apples top competitors once Steve Jobs departs (e. g. Samsung and Amazon) (Sind & Office, 2008) (Blake & Berger, 2013).
Issues Facing the Organization On any given day, customers are waiting for the next new thing from Apple Inc. Each year Apple launches a brand new product, improving technologies that customers couldn’t wait to get their hands on (Finkle & Mallin, p. 37). As an innovator, much of Apple’s success was because of Steve Jobs. According to (Finkle & Mallin), Jobs health concerns was a real concern for him, and he knew that he might not see the continued success of Apples future (Finkle & Mallin). During

    Innovation is an internal factor of business that has served as the cornerstone for Apple’s success as a technology giant. “Arguably one of the most innovative technology companies to emerge in the last three decades,” Apple has masterfully applied the four functions of management to their business strategy (Finkle and Mallin, 2011, p. 63). The first function, planning, focuses on the company’s strategy to set out and achieve their organizational goals. The technology industry is perpetually evolving to be successful Apple has to stay ahead of the curve using strategic planning to ensure that their innovative products dominate the market. Apple “stands for innovation in personal computing and digital media distribution” (Finkle and Mallin, 2011, p. 63). The second function of management is organizing and Apple’s organizational infrastructure is strong and profitable. They employ the best software designers in California and allow China to take the competitive advantage in production. The third function of management, leading, has also played a big role in the development of Apple as a corporation. One of their most successful, intuitive, and respected leaders was Steve Jobs. Jobs redefined “Apple’s image to a ‘hip’ alternative to other brands – computers that offered a cutting-edge, tightly integrated user experience” (Finkle and Mallin, 2011, p. 65). The fourth function of management, controlling, is about modifying your product or service based on the feedback of your consumer. Jobs worked to make Apple’s products more compatible for Microsoft users. When consumers complained that Apple’s tablet prices were too high, Apple released an iPad Mini with much of the same base functionality but at a much lower price tag.
