Unit MU 1.7 Introduction to children and young people’s development

1. Know the main stages if children and young people’s development.
1.1 Outline the expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years to include:
Physical development
Communication
Intellectual development
Social, emotional and behavioural development

Infancy (0-3 years)
Physical – infants are quite helpless and dependent when are born and in order to survive they need to be looked after. To ensure this happens they are born with several reflexes. These include rooting, sucking, swallowing, grasping, and stepping and startle reflex.
Babies are helpless when they are born and they don’t have very much muscular co-ordination. They are able to focus their eyes very quickly and follow sound from side to side as well as being able to cry and make gurgling sounds
Soon the muscles begin to strengthen and babies start to control their movements. This allows them to begin exploring their environment and learn how their world operates. Physical control and co-ordination progress downwards, beginning with the head and moving through the neck, trunk arms and the legs.
Muscle control 0-3 years:
2 Months – able to raise head when lying on stomach
4 Months- can grasp objects using whole hand
6 Months- Can sit up without support
8 Months – Can start to crawl
12 Months – can walk without help
18 Months- Can climb stairs and run but often falls
2 Years - Can controls muscles which allow for toilet training and can climb on furniture and kick a ball but not yet catch one
3 Years- can jump and ride a tricycle
Intellectual – means the development of the mind and lets us to recognise, remember, reason, know and understand thing around us. We also develop communication skills which allow us to make ourselves understood and to develop relationships.

    Physical - New born babies are born with many different reflexes to help them survive. These reflexes include the ability to swallow and suck reflexes, enabling them to feed. They also use a grasp reflex where they will automatically wrap their fingers around the caregiver’s finger or object when it is pressed against their palm. As the child ages there are many other physical developments that they learn by the time they are 4 weeks old they can focus on a face and follow an object, by the time they reach 5 months old they are able to lift their own head while they are lay flat on their stomach, roll over, wave a rattle or toy and try and reach for an object to hold.     There are expected patterns of development for children from birth to 19 years old. Although all children are individuals and unique and there are factors which can have a bearing on development such as health, environment and home life and parenting these milestones happen naturally. The patterns start from birth with new-born babies having very little control of their bodies and are totally dependent. Up to 1 month old, a baby can focus both eyes and use different facial expressions. They will be able to turn their head towards the source of a sound and detect smells for example the smell of milk from their mother’s breast. A sucking reflex is also present allowing baby to take milk from the breast or bottle. By 2-3 months a baby will be able to mimic a smile from a familiar face for example when a parent or sibling smiles they can usually smile back as well as being able to imitate some movements and facial expressions. Due to strengthened neck muscles, a baby of 2-3 months old will be able to hold their head up for short periods of time which will move onto having more control over their head and arm movements allowing them to reach, grasp and put objects their mouth and will investigate/explore objects by shaking, hitting, turning, dropping and throwing them- this usually happens by 6 months old. By now they would also have enough grip and coordination to hold their own bottle. At around 7-9 months having gained muscle strength they become a lot more mobile and should be able to sit unaided and crawl or bottom shuffle. By 10-12 months they can stand and mimic simple actions. As they pass their first birthday and towards 1½ we refer to them as toddlers…

    Movement is the law of the child’s being, he has a biological need to move. A newly born human remains embryonic after birth. The child at this stage is in complete in relation to power of movement, unlike the other animals that will stand up, run, jump and walk the day they are born. Also the vocal means of expression characteristics of the species is often there from the birth in the case of animals. Though the voices are faint and plaintive, puppies emit a real bark, kittens meow, and lambs bleat. They are endowed with such instinct from birth. “Animals have merely awakened their instincts towards their specified behavior,” (Maria Montessori, Her life and Work chapter XII, page 203). In the case of human baby, it is less complete physically and is much slower to develop its powers of movement. At birth, baby cannot raise himself, cannot speak, cannot walk, he lies inert and helpless for a long time. It takes a period of time before a baby begins to sit up, to crawl, to stand upright and to walk. These inabilities in human baby should not be attributed to muscular weakness but lack of co-ordination in the muscles - i.e. a condition which is due to the fact that the child’s nervous system at birth is incompletely developed. This does not mean that the child has a complete incapacity for coordinated movements. For instance, he knows how to suck which is a complicated action requiring accurate coordination of many muscles.…
