Unit 1
Promote Positive Behaviour

1.1 Legislation is a set of laws that have been created by the government to make sure all childcare settings are run correctly. To promote positive behaviour, legislation’s such as the Children Act 1989, Human Rights Act 1998, Every Child Matters 2004, Equality Act 2010 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 are followed by the setting. These Act’s include rules and regulations that a setting is required to follow in order to promote positive behaviour.

All settings also follow Frameworks that are set by different companies that work with childcare settings. For example, the EYFS have a framework that requires any setting that works with children between 0 – 5 years, to follow so that the children can develop correctly. The framework explains how the child should be developing at their current age and ways in which to promote their aspects of development and behaviour.

Codes of Practice and Polices are regulations set up usually by the setting itself and are created in relation to their own views on standards of behaviour. These set the boundaries for staff and children to follow in order to make sure things run smoothly.

All legislation’s, frameworks, codes of practice and polices within my settings are applied by making sure all staff are fully aware of them and are trained in the correct areas so that they are keeping with them at all times. Also, the children are also made aware of them and why they are important so that they will follow them also.

1.2 Restrictive interventions are when somebody will intervene upon another person right and freedom of movement in order to stop something from happening. There are different ways of using restrictive interventions, for example:
Physical Intervention – using actual bodily contact and holding/moving a person away from something to stop it from happening. (This should only be used when there is clear justification and done in the guidance of the settings
