Unit 4: Prisons: How and Why There are three types of management styles which are; Authoritarian, Democratic, and Laissez-faire. I’m going to define what each three styles are and give a solution to each style.
Authoritarian Style: In my own words, authoritarian style is basically where one person, better known as the leader, is in charge. He or she makes all decisions, rules and regulations and passes them down to his employees for them to follow with little supervision. He wants to make sure that his employees follow and carries out all rules and regulations, and his or her authority shouldn’t be questioned by anyone. The leader is assumed that he or she knows what is best for the organization. According to the article, “Leadership styles”, Brennen states that “authoritarian leaders can be arrogant, hostile, boastful, and egotistical” (n.d.). I would definitely consider using the authoritarian style for such individuals who are in prison or in jail,

It’s more of a group of people who are in charge. Supervision is minimal as individuals take the responsibility for their behavior. In this type of style, subordinates are encouraged to express their ideas and make suggestions, but, however, shared decisions are not likely to occur in all aspects of the organizational operations. According to the article, “Leadership styles”, Brennen states, “Democratic leaders sell ideas. They tend to be warm, confident, and friendly” (n.d.). Employees are encouraged to participate.     The Department of Corrections has continuously changed their goals and objectives throughout the history of corrections. The continuous changes to policies have many contributing factors beginning with the Attorney General, Governors, and appointed directors of the incarceration establishments. With changing laws, new problems arising and changing political stand points based on campaign agendas prisons themselves have been forced to adapt.     In the book, A place to Stand, by Jimmy Santiago Baca, Baca writes about prison and how being incarcerated can have impact on a person and their family. With the most beautiful, strong and poetic language, Baca tells us the story of all the people who faces difficult times in order to find their place in the world. Baca always felt like he had no place to stand in society because, all of his life he was put down by his family and friends.     To me, the true measure of a professional the attitude and behavior toward the people we serve. We as correctional personnel are, or should be problem solvers rather than task oriented; I tend put the concerns of others before myself, and preventing inmates from setting the ground rules for the relationship, recognize their limitations, respect of all inmates, and take pride in my work and profession. In my facility we encourage education and training to make sure that we are current in the knowledge of how to handle situations while on any shift; as well as workshops in house to vent our grievances and/or suggestions to keep our facility safe.
