5.4. Legal duties and obligations around PPE The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 These regulations seeks to ensure that where the risks cannot be controlled by other means, [ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is correctly selected and used. The Regulations do not apply where requirements are detailed in other regulations e.g. respirators in the Control of Substances
5.5. It is the responsibility of employees to: Ensure that they take reasonable care to protect their own health and safety and that of their co-workers and other persons in or near the workplace; Report to management any hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions or risks that they identify in their work environment; Participate in training provided by the employer, or delegate, regarding the appropriate use, care, and maintenance of PPE; Use PPE in accordance with instruction provided and follow established safety guidelines; Comply with departmental policy and program requirements and the OHS Act and Regulations respecting PPE; Take reasonable care of PPE; Inspect PPE prior to each use; and Ensure the use of PPE is restricted to those duties carried out while conducting the employer’s business.
5.6. It is the responsibility of employers to implement certain basic health and safety requirements regarding the provision and use of PPE in their organization
5.7. Always perform hand hygiene immediately before putting on and after removing PPE.
Always put your PPE on before contact with patients.
Sequence for putting on PPE
• perform hand hygiene
• disposable apron
• mask – if needed
• eyewear –if needed
• disposable gloves
1. How to put on an apron
• place apron over the head
• fully cover torso from neck to knees and wrap around the back secure at waist
2. How to put on a mask
• secure on head with ear loops
• place over nose, mouth, and chin
• fit flexible nose piece over bridge
• adjust fit – snug to face and below chin
