Market research
The process of assessing the viability of a new product or service through techniques such as surveys, product testing and focus groups. Market research allows a company to discover who their target market is and what these consumers think about a product or service before it becomes available to the public. Market research may be conducted by the company itself or by a third-party company that specializes in market research. Test subjects are usually compensated with product samples and/or paid a small stipend for their time.
Primary research
Primary research is research used to collect data for a specific task. Types of primary data collection methods include Personal Observation: The observation of the respondent by a trained observer. The aim is to observe consumer responses and behaviour to a product or customer service. Personal Interviews: Face to face interview between an interviewer and the respondent at home or in shopping centres.
Observation
Watching how consumers behave provides many insights, but can leave questions unanswered. Observation works well in retail markets; sit outside a shop and watch how many people walk by, look at the window display etc.
Postal surveys
Postal surveys where sent to the address of potential customers who complete the form and send back in a pre-paid envelope. Relatively cheap, a postal survey can cover a wide geographical area and avoids the potential for interviewer bias. However, response rates (the proportion of people sending back a completed survey) are often very low and it can take be a long time before enough surveys are returned
Telephone interviews
Not to be confused with “telesales” (which is a method of selling), the telephone interview allow quicker feedback than a postal survey. However, potential customers are often wary of being called and may be reluctant to give anything other than short answers

    In the future telephone surveys can be beneficial a toll-free number can be provided on the customer’s receipt for them to call to leave feedback. When a phone interview is conducted by a person and not an automated system, the interviewer can ask more in-depth questions to determine the root of the score. A company can determine why a question scored so high or so little. This aspect is helpful to the company because it allows them to know what needs to change to make a score better. For example if the parking has a poor rating, more in-depth questions may find that parking has a poor rating because there are always carts in the lot blocking spaces. This response allows the company to act on making that score better. Phone interviews could also be useful year round, providing information for continual improvements to customer service.     Tesco identifies vacancy in different ways firstly, if someone quits their job they would immediately know that person has left and needs to be replaced. If there is more demand online they would know that they need fewer checkouts and need more personal shoppers. If Tesco have an expansion they would know there is more vacancies because more shifts need to be covered. There a quite a few jobs which people do at Tesco. the lower level jobs are going to have a more simple description whereas the higher levers are going to be more complex and it is likely that they will change over time but the lower levels probably won't. tesco goes with this by rating the jobs in levels, level 1 are the frontline jobs working directly with customers. Work level 2 is leading a team of employees who deal directly with customers. Requires the ability to manage resources, to set targets, to manage and motivate others. Work level 3 is running an operating unit. Requires management skills, including planning, target setting and reporting. Work level 4 are the people who are supporting operating units and recommending strategic change. Requires good knowledge of the business, the skills to analyse information and to make decisions, and the ability to lead others. For work level 5 people are responsible for the performance of Tesco as a whole. Requires the ability to lead and direct others, and to make major decisions.
