Unit 1: Exploring Equality and Diversity
1. What is meant by diversity?
Diversity means that people are different and varied from each other.
2. Describe the community you live in. Highlight some of the variations you may observe in terms of:
 Interests
 Beliefs
 Ages
 Lifestyles
 Personal, social and cultural identities.
The community I live and work with is all sorts of people, from young 18 y/o up to them in their late 70’s. They all come from different ethnic background which means they all have different believes, lifestyles and social and cultural identities as well. I come originally from Poland, I was born in a Christian family however I would consider myself as atheist, as I don’t believe in any god. I know people in my community that are Christian, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and Buddhism. We all have different interests and lifestyles, most of the people that I know are married couples or are in the relationship and there is a huge difference in their lifestyle comparing to the single people, they have more responsibilities such as children or family home. We all enjoy going out to town, some of us like sports such as judo, some others like to have a gym work out instead. There is also a group of people that likes to get together and go paintballing every few weeks. We all have our own interests as well, we listen to different music, have different culinary taste and have different fashion styles. There are people that enjoys the Saturday in the theatre when others like to have a night out in the club or a weekend at home with family. We all lead different lifestyles which is mainly determined by our age and social class and culture identity. Some people lead an active lifestyle, others prefer stay at home.

3. Explain how the variations in question 2 contribute to the diversity of the community.
The variations outlined in question 2 shows how the community is diverse. It means that there is probably no two people that are the same, and it only proves that we are all different.
4. Give some examples to explain how diversity:
 Enhances your life
 Enhances the local community
 Enhances this country.
It's very important to have diversity in every aspect of my life. There are so many different things that we can teach each other, about different cultures, places and sometimes languages. It also teaches me the tolerance to other people. The community and the country without the diversity would be simply boring, there wouldn’t be so many places to discover that are created by people from different cultures and backgrounds.
5. Describe what it means to respect people’s differences and why it is important to respect differences. it means not to judge or treat anyone in a specific way just because they're not like me. We are all different but we are also all equal. If we do not respect each other’s differences we may discriminate against them unfairly, e.g. because of someone’s age or colour and cause distress or worse . We do not have to agree with someone else's lifestyle for instance, but it is their choice.

1.1 Diversity means people are unique; they are different to one another. They have different points of view, see things differently from each other because of the way they have been brought up, depend even on the way they are looking. Their age, culture, social status, sex orientation, abilities, race, politics, and class divide into many categories. Age group divides child, teenager, adult, elderly, babies, they are all different. Every country they have own ideas one things right to one country but it doesn’t mean it is accepted in another country. Social status divides very poor, poor, working class, middle class, rich, millionaire etc. Sex orientation a person might have interest in the same sex or the opposite sex or no interest at all. It’s totally up to individual’s wishes. Some people might be academic, artistic, and practical; creative should not be judged or compared. People have different colour of skin. Some people have strong view point of politics others might have no clue. They go to different ideas. People choose to follow different paths in life. Some people like to get married and have children. Others might like to get married but not have children. Also some people prefer to be single but they might have sexual relationships also while others might choose to be alone or to socialise with friends and family, it is down to people what they decide. All people are good for something, it shouldn’t be looked into general abilities like a ‘must be’ - everyone should be academic or creative for example. Social economic is very different from person to person - some people have no money to afford basic needs others might have too much, in the middle there are different stages people who value money and are careful and sensitive about others might spend their wages in short period of time. Although people environment and other differences makes huge different in seeing things differently. If they look at the same things they will come up with…

They bring a diverse and colourful range of cultures, traditions, ceremonies, skills, languages, backgrounds, experience and other attributes to our society. A diverse approach aims to recognise, harness and manage differences, so that everyone can contribute to society and realise their full potential. Diversity challenges us to recognise and value all sorts of differences in order to make society more inclusive, fair and comfortable for everyone.…
