UNIT 1: Roles, responsibilities & relationships in lifelong learning
1.1 Explain your role and responsibilities as a teacher in lifelong learning.
It is vitally important for me as a teacher to keep up to date with legislation and any changes made to legislation. I will start with explaining what the difference is between a legislative requirement and a code of practice. A legislative requirement is a duty to act according to the law as defined in an Act of Parliament and is usually enforceable through the courts. Code of Practice is a set of rules outlining how a person in a particular profession is expected to behave. Finally a Statutory code of practice is a Code of practice approved by Parliament and admissible as evidence in any legal action.
Teaching is covered by a multitude of generic legislation and codes of practice as a teacher I require an understanding of these areas which include Health and Safety at work Act 1974,Data Protection Act 1998,Equality Act 2006,Race Relations(Amendment) Act 2000,Disability Discrimination Acts1995 and 2005 more commonly referred to as DDA, Special Education Needs and Disability Act 2001 which was designed to bring education with the remit of the DDA though the addition of part 4 DDA 1995, IfL code of practice for teachers to name but a few.
My particular area of teaching is health and safety which are covered by health and safety codes of practice and statutory instruments which are additions to acts of parliament and these could all impact on my teaching role,examples of these are Control of substances hazardous to health fifth edition and the control of substances hazardous to health regulations 2002 more commonly referred to as COSH,Manual handling operations regulations 1992, work with display screen equipment, Health and Safety(Display Screen Equipment) regulations 1992 as amended by the health and safety (miscellaneous amendments)regulations 1992 . As most of my teaching covers fire safety I will explain the
