Introduction
Growth is an important factor for nearly every company that wants to be successful in the future. For that reason, Unilever has conducted market research concerning growth opportunities in the low-end detergent market in Northeastern Brazil. This report will deal with the issue of whether an entry in the low-end Northeast is profitable for Unilever, or if it should rather refrain from entering this market. It is divided into six parts and provides the reader with the following information: the relevant economic factors, the current social situation and consumer behavior concerning detergent consume and washing habits, the main industry players in Brazil, relevant information about the technology, issues and questions that arise when entering the market, and the final conclusion.

Economic Factors
Brazil is the largest country in Latin America and has a population of 170 million. Brazilians are mainly clustered in the Southeast, where the two biggest cities can be found, and in the Northeast. While in the past Brazil's economy used to be characterized by several upturns and downturns, its economy finally boomed, after the Real, the new currency was introduced. This mainly benefited low-end consumers. However, the Brazilian economy is marked by big gaps in purchasing power between the North and the South. While people in the South have a GDP per capita similar to Saudi Arabia's, people in the Northeast have only a third of that.

Social Situation and Consumer Behavior
In order to better understand the use of detergents in the Northeast of Brazil, it is essential to examine the local washing behaviors more closely. Only 28% of the population owns a washing machine and 73% of women think that bleach is necessary to remove fat stains. Laundry soaps are also used very frequently since women use them to scrub clothes. Omo is the top brand of the portfolio and perceived as a high quality at a premium position. Minerva is a medium quality product with low brand awareness. Campeiro is a well-known cheapest product but with a low top of mind penetration. In order to develop its presence in Brazil and to gain market shares, Unilever’s top management wants now to target the low-income segment living in the Northeast region of the country. This is a very new segment that Unilever cannot market as the traditional one. There are 48 millions of low income consumers in Northeast of Brazil. This is an illiterate population, with an average per Capita income of $2,250.     In early January 1989, Irfan Mustafa, General Manager, Personal Products and Market Research, Lever Brothers Pakistan Limited, was wondering what action to take regarding the marketing of the laundry detergent bar RIN, which had been introduced to the Pakistani market in April 1984. The product was specially formulated and promoted as a fabric washer. Mr. Mustafa felt the sales volumes for RIN had reached reasonably satisfactory levels in 1988. However, a recent survey confirmed his suspicion that RIN was primarily being used for dish washing. COMPANY Lever Brothers Pakistan Limited (Levers), a subsidiary of Lever Brothers International, produced and marketed a variety of consumer products in Pakistan. The company’s diverse product line consisted of items such as shampoos, skin and shaving creams, edible oils, margarine, toilet soaps, scourers, and laundry detergents in powder and solid bar forms. In 1988, Levers had a profit before tax of Rs 277 million on sales of Rs 3.65 billion.1 MARKET In 1988, the total fabric wash sales of 263,050 tonnes in Pakistan consisted of 247,000 tonnes of laundry soap, 14,500 tonnes of nonsoap detergent (NSD) powders, and 1550 tonnes of NSD bars.2 The laundry soap, NSD detergent, and NSD bar markets had grown by 5 percent, 12 percent, and 29 percent respectively, as compared to 1987. Laundry soap retailed for Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kilogram (kg), whereas NSD detergent powders had a wider price range, retailing between Rs 20 to Rs 48 per kg. RIN was the only NSD bar in the market, with the standard 125 grams size selling for Rs 3.25 in 1988. Lever had no entry in the laundry soap segment, but its two brands of NSD powders Surf and Sunlight had captured 50 percent of the NSD powder market.…
