Unforgetable Spring Festival
Unforgettable Spring Festival The Spring Festival, which is commonly known in the west as Chinese New Year, is the most important festival for the Chinese people and the moment that all family members get together just like Christmas. People who live or work away from home will go home before the Spring Festival. Therefore, it is the busiest time for the transportation systems. Spring festival is my favorite festival because all my family members can get together and that family plays an important role in my life. My family members don't live in the same city, so we can only meet each other on Spring Festival. The most memorable of spring festival for me is the year when I went to Xi'an to visit my grandfather with my mom and dad. We start preparations for the festival from the last week before New Year. We cleaned the house thoroughly, repaid the debts, cut the hair and bought some new clothes. Doors are decorated with vertical scrolls of characters on red paper which meant to seek good luck and praise nature, this practice stemming from the hanging of peach-wood charms to keep away ghosts and evil spirits. In many families incense is burned, and also in the temples as a mark of respect to ancestors. Besides the Chinese character "fu" (meaning blessing or happiness) was a must that used to put on paper to post normally or upside down. Therefore, we have a lot of preparation to do before the festive come. People often pay a great attention to the Spring Festival Eve. On New Year’s Eve, our family would prepare a great feast. The meal was more luxurious than usual. Dishes such as chicken, fish and bean curd cannot be excluded. It is because in

Before sitting down to Christmas Eve dinner everyone had to make sure that they were clean, without angry thoughts, at peace with their neighbors and without any debts. The table was covered with hay and usually set with twelve meatless dishes, among them kūčiukai (small, hard biscuits with poppies), oatmeal, cranberry pudding and so forth. Places were set at the table for recently deceased family members. Having eaten, the seated people pulled hay stalks from under the tablecloth to forecast their fortunes. A long stem meant a long life, whereas a short one meant that person might not live until next Christmas. After dinner, the table was not cleared off so that the souls of dead family members could gather around it during the…

In both countries, New Year’s Day is celebrated for the passing of the old year and the start of the New Year. It is celebrated in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household, and the family ancestors as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. During the Chinese New Year, Chinese people decorate the house with red couplets on the doors and they visit each other during this holiday. They will feast on traditional foods like New Year cake and dumplings. New Year’s Day in United States is celebrated on January 1st. I was most surprised by the fact that Panni and I had the same favorite childhood memory, celebrating Christmas with our families. I was overly accommodating in my thinking and believed Panni would have some other favorite memory which involved a tradition unique to China. China and America are similar to each other in a sense that they are both developed, first-world countries; Children typically experience a happy childhood and are well provided for. However, China is a far more historically and culturally rich country than the U.S. Socially, people from China are more reserved than those in America. If I were to visit China, I would most like to see Beijing City. From what Panni told us, it seems to be the cultural and social hub of China…

Today The Rite of Spring is regarded as a revolutionary piece of music and choreograph. Its choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky, was born in 1889. He started his dance career after he joined the Imperial Ballet School in 1900, in which he studied under Enrico Cecchetti and Nicholas Legat. He took many lead roles until his dance career took a turning point, and met Sergei Diaghilev. He danced with famous Anna Pavlova, as a lead in the Ballets Russes in Paris, and also starred in Fokine's pieces "Le Pavillon d'Armide," "Cleopatra," and "The Feast." He then went on to choreograph his own ballets, such as "L’Aprés-Midi d'un Faune" (The Afternoon of a Faun) and "The Rite of Spring" ("Russian Ballet History"). Most of Nijinsky's works were created far before the time they could be appreciated. The Rite of Spring, however, led to modern dance. The music in this dance was composed by Igor Stravinsky, which also played a revolutionary role in modern dance (Anderson).…

The 1960s was a decade of political and social upheaval. The counterculture, which was what the decade was called, became disappointed with all the restrictions and conventions of the straight society. The Summer of Love did not occur until 1967, but the decade was inspired by the Bohemian spirit which was already present in the 1950s; known as the Beat generation. The counterculture gained significant influence in liberal cities such as Berkley and San Francisco. In 1967, Scott McKenzie released his song San Francisco and with this song came rumors of a huge love-in in the summer. This is what fueled the Summer of Love. Leaders of the counterculture in the Haight-Ashbury district were anxious to start planning an event that would fit in with the Summer of Love hype. Their hope was that musicians and other artists would just naturally travel over to the Haight-Ashbury. The Summer of Love would not have been the same without the usage of LSD and marijuana, free love, and the all famous rock and roll music.…
