Understanding people: "It is always those we live with and love and should know who elude us."
UNDERSTANDING PEOPLE

The pupose of this essay was to explore the question of why people are so hard to understand. The quote came from the book A RIVER RUNS THROUGH ITby NORMAN McCLAIN .

"It is always those we live with and love and should know who elude us."

After reading this quote over and over, I finally have an idea of what it means. The word elude, as found in Webster's New World Dictionary, means to avoid or escape either mentally or physically. This quote is talking about the mental aspect.

It is easy to know a person from their outer image, an image that is often "made up" to cope with the world around them. We all know our family and friends and those we interact with each day. However, we only know their outer image. To see what is really going on in peoples' minds we must understand them. Theoretically, spending every hour of every day with the people we love should make us aware of what they are thinking, but realistically it doesn't. Very few people have the ability to open up and share their feelings with others. By showing their true beliefs, people must take off the armor that protects them from ridicule. This is not an easy task to undertake, as humans fear humiliation.

From this quote I have learned that we should take time to understand people. Even if they portray themselves as being perfectly fine with no problems, chances are something they do not want to share is bothering them. Most importantly, we should also take time to comprehend ourselves. We may need the most help and not even know

In this speech he teaches the audience that the things we miss, tends to cripple our thinking and where the things we make up fuels our toxic emotions. When the perspective on any situation is not producing the results that you want, you should ask what am I missing and what am I making up. But usually we do not look at these two concepts of a perspective; we tend to assume the worst of that situation.…

“It is one of the commonest of mistakes to consider that the limit of our power of perception is also the limit of all there is to perceive.”(Leadbeater) Many people believe the way something is perceived, is always the way that it appears to be. In reality, there might be more to a person he is willing to show. If we assume that the way someone or something is seen is always as it appears to be, we would be lying to ourselves. A surplus of people are not exactly how they are seen to be. We should not judge someone too harshly as we may not have all of the facts or details of what is really happening to a person. Perceptions can override our abilities to correctly judge our peers and even ourselves, which can be very impactful.…

All of us at one point in our lives are thrown into situations that are not easy, and we’re forced to steer through the disorder and chaos. Ralph Emerson said “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” In the essays “Salvation” and “Shooting an Elephant” authors Langston Hughes and George Orwell convey the similar message that anything of importance, can’t be forced on anyone, they rather have to find it for themselves.…

Accepting someone seems so easy, yet people find it so hard to do. Someone wouldn’t guess that she is so broken because she is good at faking it. She’s faked it so long it’s become the norm. However faking it isn’t fixing it. Eventually the distress builds up and she has two options: fight or flight. Nobody should judge someone unless they have walked a mile in their shoes. Judgement thoroughly hits when someone has an unexpected event in their life that is not socially acceptable. Acceptance is the main problem here because no one is doing it. Let others do what they want. Let them believe in what they want. Other people’s opinions don’t matter. In the sermon by Jonathon Edwards, said that God is angry with His people and “Thus easy is it for God when he pleases to cast his enemies down to hell” (Edwards, 120). Edwards wrongly expressed how God really feels for His people because God loves all of His people. He is a loving God not an unkind God. People in that congregation felt mortified. They didn’t need to be held to impractical standards to be accepted. Others have the right to be enough for…

Being understood is not the same as being listened to. Most of the time people don't fully listen to you anyway. I've tried numerous times to explain how I feel, but each and every time I gather up the strength to express myself I get interrupted by another inaccurate remark about what people swore they heard come out of my mouth, rather than what actually was spoken. Being misunderstood is such a pain. You tell them your fine and then the next second they're on the phone with what is soon to be your new therapist. What part of fine do they not understand? I have to admit, I do have my ups and downs, but every once in a while I come across a smooth slate of concrete to drive over.…

In reading the article “Close Relationships Sometimes Mask Poor Communication” I was intrigued by the information that was given, the article touched on some important issues about relationships and how when you are communicating with your spouse, lover, or fiancé how we automatically assume that there is a mutual understanding, or that we automatically no. But more than half of the time you find yourself upset that you couldn’t get your point across or that your counter parts just doesn’t listen, that’s when the statement “that’s why we argue so much”, comes into play. When the truth is that we are just not understanding each other either I am speaking while he’s speaking or he just stop listening altogether until I say something to touch a nerve. I have had several arguments with my fiancé because when we are having a discussion it seems to almost always go to the left. I have tried to explain to him my feelings on this matter that’s been like a thorn in our sides since we began dating, I can’t get him to understand how important it is for my children to see their father and I express a good healthy relationship without the arguing and fighting, but each and every time my ex-husband comes around my fiancé and I always fight because he thinks that my ex-husband wants to rekindle a relationship or have an altered motive. When I try to explain to my fiancé that there’s nothing of the sort I find myself saying all of the wrong things and making all of the wrong points which in the end makes the situation worse. My fiancé and I are really still learning each other and communication seems to be our weakest point although I try be very clear on the points that I’m trying to make it seems as if we are really from two different plants “Women are from Mars” This is…

The hardest mountains to climb in life are the mountains we create. A humans ability to reason can be both the making and breaking of any man, woman, child and community. We learn to train our ability to reason through education, habits, and life experience. As human beings without these abilities we would not have the power to reflect, as Aristotle suggests we would no longer be man but beast.…
