Understanding importance of cultural differences in outsourcing agreements
Background Underestimating Importance of Cultural Differences in Outsourcing Agreements is a peer-reviewed journal article authored by Kvedaraviciene & Boguslauskas, published in the year 2010 by Engineering Economics.
According to UNESCO culture is defined as “the set of distinctive, spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of society or a social group, and that it encompasses, in addition to art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs ( UNESCO, 2001). The article on“Understanding Importance of Cultural differences in Outsourcing Agreements” throws light on the failure or partial completion of outsourcing deals due to cultural differences. Cultural differences not marked as one of the top features to be considered and this is one of the key reasons for which an outsourcing deals fails ( Kvedaraviciene & Boguslauskas, 2010, p.189 ). Culture differences exist despite globalization and the world becoming a flat place.
The advancements in technology have decreased the costs due to technical failures but not the costs due to cultural differences. My knowledge levels have improved after reading the journal as I understood that the cost due to cultural differences cost in terms of the amount of time and money spent on meetings, telephones and video-conferencing due to negotiations involved because of cultural differences. There were also costs like time wasted on conflict resolution, revised decisions, service complaints, gold plating due to increased scope, reduced quality, missed deadlines, low morale among employees and reduced savings. It is to curtail these losses because of lost deals that my organization has introduced a training program for managers on international business etiquette. The program has trainers who have worked in multi-cultural environments and taught us etiquettes apart from a visit to offices in different countries to get exposure to various cultures.

Recently, there have been many debates over the important issue on how companies and governments in the past decades have been increasingly sourcing a wide range of tasks to offshore sites. A group member of ours is an overseas buyer for his company. He is fortunate enough to experience what that is like firsthand. As a buyer, he is required to travel to different countries where large labor and talent pools are available at lower costs to try to procure goods and services at the lowest price, in order to help his company reach higher profits. Many Americans believe that outsourcing is one of the main reasons that the unemployment rate has been increasing in the United States, so they complain and publicly criticize the companies and governments who outsource jobs abroad. Also many U.S. workers (from white- collar well educated individuals to semi-skilled workers) have become more concerned about the security of their jobs due to increasing global economic integration since the early 2000s.…

While outsourcing may be beneficial to some of the companies partaking in it, the general consensus is that it ultimately proves to be harmful to the American workforce. The act of outsourcing and shifting many company call centers and technical support teams, or “low skill service jobs,” to foreign countries reduces jobs for those that could truly benefit from them within our own country. The unemployment rate has dramatically increased, and continues to rise, compared to what it has been in years past; yet there are numerous companies which still insist on handing over these “low skill service jobs” to people in other countries such as India. The most obvious and logical reason for outsourcing is reducing costs; people are working for a smaller fraction of the pay compared to that of their American counterparts. Outsourcing is used by many companies both in and out of the United States; it has proven to be beneficial to the companies that choose to partake in it, while other companies do just fine without outsourcing.…

Due to these jobs not being mass-processing functions, which are India’s strong hold, there are greater opportunities for Latin American and European countries, such as Argentina and Poland; to gain these jobs because they have a higher labor costs than India. Using an outsourcing firm to hire an entry-level accountant in Argentina, for example, costs 13 percent less than a similar U.S. worker, while an Indian worker would cost 51 percent less, but many employers moving higher-end jobs offshore care about more than just getting the lowest wage. “The higher-value outsourcing jobs require a greater understanding of business context and a higher amount of interaction with clients,” says Phil Fersht, chief executive officer of HfS Research, a Boston outsourcing research firm.…

Culture has been stated as one of the biggest challenges for a successful offshore outsourcing. It is very difficult to understand specifically problems related to different cultural aspects. The cultural aspects can be understood either by reading research studies or first-hand observations and experiences. In this case, I understood the cultural impacts purely by experiences. Normally, western countries are more individualistic compared to cooperative culture in Latin America and Asia. According to Utkarsh Rai, author of “Offshoring Secrets” the following are the specific aspects of the Indian Culture: the compare and contrast culture, the workplace socialization practices, the importance of age and seniority, sensitivity to criticism and…

In order for U.S. companies to become more competitive and efficient in the global market, some have adopted the practice of employing workers in other countries, often third world and developing nations, to reduce labor and/or technology costs. Outsourcing provides growth potential for these developing countries by boosting the money coming into the country and by providing opportunities for individual growth of its citizens. Although outsourcing to foreign countries can help to increase company revenues, decrease production costs and improve production rates, there are also costs a company must weigh when determining if this is the optimal choice. The public 's perception of the company may decrease as a result of moving work overseas, as many US citizens choose to purchase only American-made products, especially during times of economic recession. This can lead to a decrease in company goodwill and negative reactions to the product brand. The company 's increased revenues, however, can result in higher salaries for the retained American employee, bring in greater national profit, and can help revive or build a financially successful company. All of these issues must be considered when deciding if outsourcing to foreign countries should be adopted into a company 's cultural environment.…
