Whether it be with a child, young person or adult effective communication is really important when developing relationships as it can not develop without it as nearly all breakdowns in relationships are due to people not listening to each other. Our tone of voice, body language and eye contact are useful tools and when reading these cues can tell us a lot about that person. Without communication and understanding respect and trust would not be possible. We need to be able to understand the information being communicated to us in order to build positive bonds with: teachers, careers, colleagues, acquaintances, managers, parents, children etc..., this will also aid in resolving conflicts and the giving and receiving of instructions.     Communicating is very important in my setting and is a major aspect of my work. When working with children clear communication is needed this could be verbally or using sign language, flash cards or through play. Communication helps to build positive relationships with the children and their family's. Communicating with parents/carers is vital, parents/carers know the children better than anyone and can give us valuable information regarding the child's like and dislikes, dietary requirements, special needs and cultural beliefs this will help us meet the child's needs. Parents/carers also like to know information regarding their child so sharing information regarding the child's developments or any problems that they may be having helps to build good relationships. In my setting a lot of the children have additional needs and before the children start we communicate with the parents verbal and via paper to find out as much information as possible to help the children settle in to the setting and make sure all the needs can be met. We may also need to liaise with other professionals to make sure they are fully supported in the setting.     After reading the article on Close Relationships Sometimes Mask Poor Communication it hit home for me. Me and my fiancé have poor communication skills. We have been together for the past eight years, and we still have a problem commutating. He likes to take over the conversation, or cut me off when we are talking. He said that is because he has short term memory, and that I am long winded, and he has short term memory , and needs to get respond to what I am saying or he will forget if he lets me finish.
